Reading the paper this morning, I stumbled upon an article about the administration of a drug to chickens that contains organic arsenic. It was thought that organic arsenic would not be converted to its harmful inorganic counterpart, but in fact organic arsenic WAS converted to inorganic arsenic in the livers of the chickens that were given the drug. It's worth noting that organic chicken producers and Perdue do not feed the drug to their chickens, so if you feed Perdue livers or organic, you should be okay. Heres the link to the article for those who are interested: www.nytimes.com/2011/06/09/business/09arsenic.html?src=rechp

Thank you so much for posting this! Glad to hear Purdue does not use this, that's mainly the chicken I feed!

Had to double check, thankfully I kept the container the chicken livers came in and they are organic.

Thank you for posting this, I'll make sure to look out. I still can't believe, no matter how many times I hear or see it, that people still inject their livestock with more and more drugs, it is sickening and harmful not only to the receivers of it!

Does this apply to Canada too? I've never heard of "Purdue" before and the chicken livers we have here are just chicken livers, there isn't really such thing as organic organs vs. non organic. There's organic chicken breast vs. non organic, but the organs just seem to be organs?

Unfortunately, according to the article, yes, Canada is included in this:
Roxarsone is still approved for use in chickens and swine in Canada, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam and in poultry only in Chile, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, Australia, Pakistan and Jordan.

Especially when you realize arsenic can build up in the body over time, not getting to toxic levels for quite a while

Oofa!! Well I guess its time to throw out all the frozen chicken livers!! I don't remember what kind I bought I threw the package out. Most likely publix (grocery store brand). Will definitely be getting purdue or organic from now on.

Me too. I bought them months ago when they were on sale and I froze them in little zip lock bags. I'm throwing them out.
