Arsenic is a poisonous chemical element that has been used in animal husbandry for centuries. It's an old horse traders trick. They get a horse that is malnourished and add arsenic to his feed. The characteristics of this are improved appetite, increase in weight and a glossy coat. The horse fetches a better price and the Arsenic is stored in the fat and the liver (the liver functions as a blood cleaner and absorbs toxins) and the next time the horse is short on feed and uses the fat stores it takes sick and dies. Now what they do in this day and age is use those properties of arsenic in whatever compound they put in the feed, to have the chicken put on weight. Since they are slaughtered before it reaches lethal levels, they are just fat, butchered chickens: not poisoned butchered chickens. Anyone who ingests the chickens, puts the arsenic into their body. It doesn't get eliminated, it gets stored. Little bodies have less tolerance than big bodies, but they are fat and their coats look good. So, I didn't know about the arsenic trick still being used. Moves me closer to vegetarianism. The moral of my story is get certified organic. Some places put "organic" on their packaging but it doesn't mean anything. I would also be checking on the other farm raised meats. If they'll do it to one, they'll do it to all.

Part 2a: I have been researching the situation. The arsenic compound is used to prevent coccidiosis, which is a widespread opportunistic parasite. I will be back later with Part2b. I have to go to an appointment.

Onto local farmers markets for me. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
