Since perdue doesn't use the arsenic supplement in its feed or feed arsenic based food, all parts of perdue chickens should be okay. The liver is where the organic arsenic is converted into inorganic, so that would be the most harmful part to feed. For those who are worried, why not try cow liver? Its worth noting that all farm raised animals are fed a cocktail of drugs, and all of those drugs are filtered out by the liver and kidneys. I'm not saying everyone should run to the store to buy their ferrets organic, humanely raised meat (gee that would be expensive ), but the presence of drug metabolites and residues in farm raised poultry, beef, and pork is a fact of life, especially for raw fed fuzz. Sure makes a strong case for raising your own whole prey though if i dont say so myself

If only we all had that option. I am getting nothing but organic chicken from now on (I think I always buy perdue anyway, so no biggie), but I think about all the times I bought whatever's on sale.

geez, i'll have to call walmart and see if they have the perdue liver. i normally shop at giant and all they have is their store brand...
my father works for perdue. i'll have to call him as well to find out what else might be lurking in the chicken.

This makes me so mad . Chicken liver is the girls' favourite and I'm having a hard time getting them to eat enough pork liver and they refuse the beef liver Will have to go on a city-wide search for organic chicken livers (and hearts I guess??? or do you think hearts are okay?) but seriously, why can't food producers be less stupid and cheap and actually make SAFE products. Even I don't feel great about eating non-organic chicken anymore. Grr... geez, i'll have to call walmart and see if they have the perdue liver. i normally shop at giant and all they have is their store brand... my father works for perdue. i'll have to call him as well to find out what else might be lurking in the chicken. That would be great, keep us posted!

Carpetsharks- check with TailBlazer's. They have turkey livers and hearts They are the Mountain Dog ones. And that drug isn't approved for use in turkeys here in Canada.

I managed to pick up some turkey hearts from them the other day actually but the girls still don't like them as much as their chicken hearts I will definitely ask about the turkey liver, next time I'm in though, that sounds like a good solution! thanks!

its it just the livers that are affected? or are they just the worst part of the chicken?
can we feed different livers? like beef and pork?

From what I understand, it is more concentrated in the liver, but does affect the entire chicken. But everyone- please remember!!! This drug has been in use since 1944! So we've all been eating it all our lives. Has it contributed to the increase in cancer rates? Quite likely, but then so have a lot of things. Should we try to find alternatives for our fuzzums? IMO, yes, by all means if possible. If not- I'd NOT be getting into an all out panic.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14295993Just wanted to post this as it might pertain to the topic "Chickens were fed a ration containing 30 per cent of toxic groundnut meal for up to six weeks. The concentration of aflatoxin (toxic metabolites of Aspergillus flavus) in the above ration was 3.06 p.p.m. At the end of 2nd, 4th or 6th week the birds were killed. The meat was removed from the bones and put through a meat grinder. The livers of three groups were pooled together. Three control groups of birds kept on commercial pellets were treated similarly. Female ferrets, two years of age, were used in the present study. They were divided into four groups. The first three groups were given for one month meat from chickens fed the toxic ration for 2, 4, and 6 weeks, respectively. Each of these three groups contained one control ferret that was fed with the meat of chickens fed a commercial ration for a similar period of time. One half of the 4th group was fed pooled liver from intoxicated birds and one half was fed liver from control birds. No significant changes in the ferret tissues were observed as a consequence of feeding them with the meat or liver from the chickens chronically poisoned with toxic groundnut meal."

So if I'm reading this correctly, the ferret fed these contaminated livers showed no problems? I wonder about over the longer term. But- wouldn't the contaminant have shown up in that study period?

Idk but I'm down to 3 ziplock bags of frozen chicken livers & hearts (which is one serving each) and I can't find any chicken livers at the stores. I find plenty of hearts but no chicken livers. I will be buying beef livers this week. Which I don't like as much bc they make me gag.
