I have enough mix left for tonight and breakfast I think, then I'll make some with bigger chunks. I'm so excited!

Well this morning was frustrating. He didn't eat over night and wouldn't touch his breakfast, even when I added a few drops of salmon oil. He are a couple of pieces that I dipped on salmon oil but stopped wanting to take those too. I did double the size of the pieces but I don't think that's the issue because he didn't even try picking any up. He's acting normal so I don't think there's any kind of health issue going on.

Sounds to me like he's being a brat. Try putting a few GP pieces in?

He ate tonight. Not as much as I would have liked, but yay! Do you still want me to go ahead with a guinea pig/mouse mix? I don't want to reward his stubbornness if I know he WILL eat when he gets hungry enough...

He ate more overnight. I'm gonna try a whole mouse cut open in a few hours and see what he does. Either way I'll probably stick with chunked mice while I'm gone.

Home from my weekend away! Mom said that Remus ate like a champ while I was gone, and tonight when I fed him he was definitely picking up and eating pieces of mouse ON PURPOSE. Woop! So I think when I'm out of the mix I have I'm going to do chunks of just mouse, but remove ALL of the innards to make sure he's not getting any of the intestine nasties that I'm pretty sure were putting him off last time. When he gets to where he'll eat whole gutted mouse I will start leaving in some of the innards so he learns to pick around what he doesn't like. Does that make sense/sound okay? Also--all he's been getting since we started working with mice is the two proteins--is that a concern?

Makes perfect sense and sounds perfect. Short term 2 proteins is fine - it often takes a while to get ferrets to eat ONE protein, much less introducing a second one, in the beginning of the switch. It's long term that is the concern. So we've got mice, GP, rabbit....what else is on the planned menu?

That's all I had planned...I will check Hare Today and see what other whole prey proteins look promising. Might end up having him do three whole prey and one frankenprey, though.

Maybe rats, unless they're too close to mice? Other than that all they have is poultry...

Or, like I said, I could have pig and cow in the rotation. I plan on feeding those to Naima anyway.

So I'm still looking for a source where I can get rabbit, guinea pig, and another whole prey protein that's NOT poultry (since I have a source for mice already). I'm having trouble with it. Hare Today has rats but right now all they have is pinky rats and I don't know if they usually have more than that? And I don't know if rats are different enough from mice to count. I could also get some whole grinds from HT but if I'm feeding him grinds sometimes I don't know if he'll hold out for them over the whole prey. He hasn't eaten much since last night but his energy has been good. He was pouncing on my foot yesterday and this morning. I'm gonna check his weight in the morning when I get home.

He's at 1.04kg today. So about the same as last time. He seems kind of thin to me though, his hips seem pretty prominent. Should I be concerned?

Sorry for being MIA a few days. We had a huge exam that was a big mess, and then a very dear friend is going through a major personal crisis right now. * What's his weight? I'd have to scroll through and see what his last weight is. Can you post or text me a pic from above and a dangling pic? Rats absolutely count as a separate protein. And once he accepts whole prey, he hopefully won't hold out for the grinds as much bc he's going to start realizing that what is in his bowl is what he gets AND it will all be stuff he recognizes and accepts as food. 3 proteins is the minimum, but more is ideal so I would definitely like to see some other stuff at least rotated through occasionally if possible. The odd Frankenprey meal certainly isn't a bad way to go, same for grinds. For sources, check out RodentPro - they have all sorts of stuff. Not sure how their prices compare though, but they are the go-to whole prey supplier for the reptile community. www.rodentpro.com/products.asp
