I am not a fan of that Natures Variety Instinct. Someone told me that they now add honey to the grinds.

Slowly get them on bigger chunks (big slivers about length of your pinky). They will sit still and you see them kind of tilting their heads and chewing the meat rapidly with back teeth. Only way i can explain it. They need to do that to work up jaw strength. Then we can move onto bone in meats. For now keep weighing out the meat and add the eggshell or bone meal powder to it. Can you get chicken gizzards? Those are good tough muscle meat. Good for working up jaws OK I see what you mean about chunks like slivers. I was thinking chunks like cubes, which is what they are eating now. Do you think it would be ok to do that after my current batch of chicken? I have it cut up, cubed and frozen already. Next time I buy meat, I will do the slivers. I can alternate for now so the cubes don't go to waste. I will buy new meat tomorrow and pre-sliver it and morning meal will be the old and night meal will be the new slivers. I can get chicken gizzards. Should I just add to their soup mix and sliver it? I found out something interesting last night while making the soup for the week. My hubby and I were using the blender to puree the mixture and I said it smelled hot and he said it was fine and then it was smoking and now it is broken. We were sort of half pureed and half way more chunky. I gave Clyde and Bella both a more chunky soup. Clyde would eat the larger bits of heart but not the liver. Bella was the exact opposite and would spit out any hearts but really seemed to like the liver. So I am at least glad that they are liking more and more of what they should. Once you see them actually chewing on the large meat slivers/chunks with back teeth then try a few gizzards. Just feed them plan gizzards will destroy a blender. They are nature's "rubber"

I was watching closely when they ate last night and I can definitely tell they are chewing with back teeth. I will get the gizzards next time I go to market. Can I mix them in with the soup mush I give so they have their delicious mush all over it?
Also about the rabbit bites, would you prefer I don't give them at all? They are still in the freezer but I will get rid of them if you think they are bad. I sent you the link earlier to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

Yep. You can mix in some gizzards if they are chewing meat with back teeth before swallowing.
The NV rabbit meat is sourced out of China. I would not use but that is just me.

Ok Rabbit meat, tossed. Sorry for not posting yesterday. I had the worst migraine all day and night.
I finally got to the market this morning and picked up chicken gizzards. Will be adding some tonight to soup mix. Everything is going along. I am trying to make the slivers bigger and bigger and I do notice that they will eat them smaller but when they hit the large ones, they take them out into the corner and there they stay. Just have to give it more time.
They got weighed this morning. Clyde went from 2.3 lbs to 2.4 lbs. And my tubby Bella weighs more than her brother, I think for the first time ever. She went from 2.3 to 2.4 1/2. That's my girl.
I am thinking of throwing in a chicken wing next week and see what they do.

Slow and steady is best. The goal is to get them eating chunks about size of thumb. Then when they eat those you can take a raw chicken wing, cover with a kitchen towel and bash it so that you break the bones. Then cut the chicken wing up with a pair of kitchen scissors into pieces that are about same size as chunks they had been eating.

Chicken gizzards, not so popular. Maybe the chunks are too big. I will try and make them a bit smaller tomorrow. I still only leave kibble in overnight, and, on average, the entire night will only result in the kibble going down about .3 of an ounce. Like if I put in 2 oz of kibble, in the morning there will be 1.13 oz left, if I am doing that math correctly, which is highly unlikely without my scale in front of me.
I am going to see exactly what wing tips are when I go to market and try throwing that in as a start on bone, just to see what they will do.
They really don't seem to be looking for food midday anymore. I'll put some in but it's mostly ignored. I would say they eat about 4 oz a day each.
My thinking is I just need to start focusing on what a complete, balanced diet will include so I can start ordering from hare today or somewhere else. I've heard Hare Today is the best. I want to order up some different proteins because I can't get much different things around me.
Want to try rabbit. If I were to get Ground Rabbit/Bones/Organs, 3 lb, Coarse Ground , would that be a balanced meal? Should I lean towards the one with the fur? I know they will have to eat chunks eventually but I would like to get them a taste of different proteins ground, because I think this will make the transition to that meat easier. Does that sound weird?

Best way to get them eating different proteins is to mix them in with the chicken grinds slowly. Then increase ratio of other protein until they get used to it. I like to use like 4-5 proteins in rotation. Yes the grinds from hare today with meat/bone/organ are fine and balanced. With rabbit be sure to add at least 500 mg per meal of taurine. Even if they are eating rabbit hearts. Rabbits are apparently lower in taurine. I would start with just regular hare today grinds. Then later on you can try getting a small portion with one that has fur in it. You are too early in the game so they may turn their nose up at weird texture of fur being in a grind.
