Something the vet may have been referencing regarding season was that ferrets season even if altered. You won't see a full rut but you will see a season and they are affected. You will see increased oil production, weight loss and activity levels...this is seasoning. The problem is that because they've been altered they're unable to turn the whole sexual rush off. ciao

Gotcha, this could be exactly what he was referring too. Regardless the vet wants to see how this course of meds go then do the des. From there, the only odd thing about the des. Was that he was saying how h*ll implant asap, then h*ll call us when the weasels come into season and re-implant them regardless of weather or not its needed. He said this way they're covered for a longer period? 16monrhs he was saying? Like I said though well probably be bringing him back to this vet, he's been the most successful yet so ill have time to discuss things with him
Thank you all again!

I'm fairly sure he was talking about a neutered ferret's season. I'm just SO glad someone is finally willing to do SOMETHING to help this poor lad! And if it's IBD, you should be able to get it under control at least

All together I can't wait to be able to go and actually do a visit here myself, but more than anything I'd like to see how meeko reacts to this treatment... You can always call the vet and ask to speak to him to get some questions answered and get some clarification on a few things. As far as the allergy thing I have to disagree. I have seen so many ferrets with food allergies come through here, with Chicken being the #1 culprit. My own ferret Koda is allergic to beef. I think it is not as uncommon as the vet may think. He is after all only getting a small segment of the ferret population... Just my two cents. As for IBD/Adrenal...the two often go hand in hand. Though that does NOT mean that IBD always means the ferret is adrenal by any means! BUT as we have mentioned before, if the Des/Lupron is given at the worst it won't help but it won't hurt either, and at the best it could really help him. Pred is good, I hope it helps him. *fingers crossed*

Yeah, thank you Katt...ill try calling him on my next day of. I agree with you on the alergy thing but one idea I never stopped to consider was possibly a sensitivity, rather than an allergy...the difference being that it still effects him just not as drastically as a full blown allergy..because to be honest we haven't seen HUGE improvements by having him on strictly rabbit so could be a sensitivity instead of an allergy.
Also I would've liked to see them do something for possible adrenal but hr said hr would like yo see what 2 weeks of clavamox and pred. Would do for him before giving him the des.
More than anything as with life time will tell.. He's luckily back to eating on his own, which we sum up to him being on the pred. And he also is itching as much, he still is....oh trust us hw still is...but no where near as much luckily.
Thank you all again so much, more updates when I get out work and get to see our babies!

That's a good improvement to see! If he's eating, he's starting to feel better

Yes he could just be sensitive to it rather than allergic. And I do agree that it is best to try one thing at a time. If you try everything at once there will be no way to know which was the med to help.

As much as I hate pred.....it is a godsend when it comes to ferrets. It can mean life or death and the change within 24 to 48 hrs can be staggering. As you see the difference between fighting with him to eat to eating on his own. I hope you continue to see progress. Good luck ciao

thank you Heather, yeah I was very skeptical when my gf was texting me every moment keeping me.updated and when she said prednisone I also was well...mehh.. But yes, were hoping the best for increase in improvement due to his firm firm stance on IBD related issues over anything else.
Thanks all~

Meeko is doing better, he is eating ... ALOT which we think is due to the pred. But his itching has increased again, he is making himself very oily again and we're not to sure what to do about that. We had thought that the pred. would also help the itching.....
Not sure what to do about the itching at this point... any and all help appreciated
thank you all ~mom~

Perhaps call the vet and mention he is getting more itchy and oily again? Not really sure what's causing the itching if it's not adrenal, almost sounds like an allergy. Has anything been changed or is new to his room? A piece of furniture, new bedding, anything you can think of? We had someone on here a while back that put a new pine dresser in her house near the ferrets, and the ferret was having a similar sort of issue with extreme, unidentifiable itchiness and she wondered if the dresser was somehow causing it. [Being as pine and cedar can cause a lot of skin problems if the ferret comes in contact with them frequently. A piece of pine furniture shouldn't effect them, but supposing he had some sort of super high sensitivity...] I don't remember if she ever figured it out or not. I forget, what are you using for litter?

I can't remember- do you have him on reishi mushrooms yet? If not, do so right away. 1/2 a 500mg capsule a day. If his itchies are due to adrenal at all, or even an allergy, it should help tremendously.
