I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that if you don't continue with lupron shots for a couple months (2-3) there will be a much larger hormonal spike.

If you are going to go preventitive go with the des. All of my kids got them. Indy is only 6 months old and he got one. I didn't have Fog at the time that they were orderd, otherwise he would have got one too and he is almost 5 months. He's getting his in November. They also have a suprelorin 10, which last 4 years. But that one i believe does require anesthesia as it is quite a large implant.

Doing just one lupron shot throws their hormones way out of whack, not to mention it usually takes quite a while for effects to take place, it was 3 weeks into the 1st shot before Pip showed any improvement, on monthly shots now you would never know he is adrenal, no more sexual behavior and his hair all grew back.

So then why is the preventative Lupron given just once a year? I don't k ow if I can GET DES yet or when

I actually think the preventative is given for 3 months, to make sure you've covered the hormone spike. The idea with only doing one shot, maybe two, is to rule out existing adrenal, since one or two shots will alter any adrenal behaviours as well as starting hair regrowth.

I believe the lupron is given every 3 months or quarterly if given as a preventative, Jennifer could answer that one for sure. The des is given annually as a preventative. As a chemical alter (not something you're interested in) it can work up to 18 months to 2 yrs...nothing defined as of yet and seems to depend when it was given in relation to the ferret's season. ciao

So I have a few short days to decide whether or not to get Kenai the preventative shot when I take Koda in. It is ONE shot only (annually) of Lupron. Thoughts?

I posted on the other thread - the ONE annual will be a 3- or 4-month shot that id ideally given prior to the hormonal peak to prevent that from happening. Even though the hormonal peak has been missed, the shot will do no harm, and it will lower any hormone levels he may have.

That sucks. When I went to law school during those 3 years I had to take out more $ in loans to cover my ferrets expenses. LOL.

That sucks. When I went to law school during those 3 years I had to take out more $ in loans to cover my ferrets expenses. LOL. Yeaaa....... One of my loans was taken out specifically to cover Koda's blockage surgery. And the other....with as much $ as I spend on them you might as well say I took it out FOR ferret stuff. Then the third I just needed because I was in teh dorms that year *barf* and they are ridiculously expensive. *sigh* I was FINALLY getting caught up a little and then my stupid car and stupid vet bills have to knock me down again. I am feeling very discouraged.

Welcome to adulthood ;D I do know what you mean though, katt. I get so discouraged some days. You work and work and work, and at the end of it- your more behind than when you started! You'll get through this- you always do

I am SICK of adulthood! *stamps foot* ;D Well, Koda got his first Lupron today and I talked to the vet about getting Des. She is having the technician get a firm price estimate and will get back to me. I have to get a blood panel done as Koda has never had one done. Also, she explained to me her reasoning behind the anesthesia. Though th needle is the same size as the microchip needle, she said that it is not as sharp and can get unpleasant for the ferret. They knock the ferret out for a few min to make it easier on them. They don't shave the spot and do stitches etc. As for the issues with hyperglycemia, she said that on vet chat something or other, several vets are finding that the Des unveils insulin issues and ferrets have been known to die. According to other vets. She says she has never heard of deaths with lupron.

Hi katt, My little Zoey who has known insulinoma got a des implant almost 2 weeks ago now. She has no problems with her blood sugar at all. And it works really fast. Her vulva is almost half the size it was before she got it and her grooming of the other ferrets has almost stopped now too. There was a rumour going around about melatonin implants doing the same thing, causing hyperglycemia, and Zoey has also had 2 of those. I think it is just a rumour.
