So Kenai....about him. I think he is Significantly inbred. I came to the conclusion tonight that he is most definitely challenged. I can't really explain it very well, but he is just plain SLOW. Interacting with him versus Koda there is SUCH a gap in intelligence. And I know it isn't fair to compare him to Koda, who I swear is Einstein returned as a ferret, but even compared to what I see/read of other ferret. He just isn't too bright. But I noticed something interesting too. He is changing his coat pretty noticeably, and he now has a reverse blaze! It is pretty apparent/distinct. I will try to get some pictures. Not sure if that is related (Waarenberg's?) or not, but yeah. He is just not so bright. I love him though. He is a big squishy. He had his first big "outing" today. I took the two of them on leashes to PetCo and then this other place called Paw Prince on my way to Shane's. Kenai has bee on the leash before, and I have let him run around in his harness before too so he is used to it. But he acted like he had never been on a leash before. It was pathetic. First I put them in the shopping basket, and Kenai made no move to get out (Koda always wants out haha). Then I put them on the floor to explore the lower shelves and Kenai... *facepalm* He put his chin on the floor, his front legs back, and just propelled himself with his back legs...but not even with his butt up...more like he was swimming or something...I think his fat belly was in the way. I was like Kenai..... ?? Really?! ;D Then in the next stop, Paw Prince he was totally fine and into exploring things. Granted it IS a much more relaxed environment there being a small, privately owned pet store. There was this adorable little girl there who loved the boys and talked non stop asking questions. I wanted to ask if I could bring her home with me! She was SOOOO cute! And she was totally in love with the boys and kept picking them up and loving on them and asking things about them. I want her! *must...resist...urge to kidnap!* Great, just ONE more temptation at the Pet Store. She was funny I would totally have her as my daughter. Anyways so yeah. Kenai's first big outing, and his lack of intelligence.... That's all for now I guess.

Hahaha. That sounds exactly like how Bonkers is. He is always "swimming" on the floor.
Great story, I'm glad you shared it. It gave me a good laugh =D

ROFL. This seriously made ma laugh ;D
It makes me think of how Sari was (and still is) when we got her a few months after Reks and Pan. She was... different ;D I always thought she was either like this preppy airhead or this little geeky kid ;D The more I got to know her, the more I thought it was the latter. She IS smart when she wants to be, but she does things very differently and in a geeky-kid kind of way ;D I think it's personality personally, but since she is inbred as well (she's a REALLY little blaze who I think was a runt), I questioned the same thing ;D

Haha, that made me laugh. Sounds like he is "special," and that's okay, because you love him anyway.

You do realize, Waardenburg's ferrets don't always have a blaze? And not all "challenged" ferrets are Waardenburg's. Miss Emily is most certainly challenged, but her's was from being shut in a fridge accidently by her previous owners. Vincent is most certainly much slower than his brother, Boris. We chalked it up to being in the pet store without much mental stimulation til he was 4 1/2 months old, but Suki was 8 months when we brought her home, and she's one bright little girl , so Vincent is just plain "special"

When we got Hannable he was pretty laid back, sounds alot like Kenai.. he was very big and squishy, ate and ate, loved to just be lazy.. wasnt the quickest to react to things and it usually took him a few tries to figure something new out. He's a year old this month and in the past two months I've seen a complete personality change. If there was a ferret olympics he'd win it, he scales everything with ease, he figures out how to do things that the rest probably never even pondered, he's super quick and he's slimmed down ( I do miss the ferret jelly belly) he's into trouble from the moment he wakes up until he passes out. I litterally follow him around the whole time he's awake to keep him out of trouble if hes not in the ferret proofed room. So I wouldnt label your boy as mentally challanged just yet.. let him grow into his self and he might surprise you

I agree with Acodlin. You don't really know what he's going to become when he matures. Captain Jack came to me as a total slug. He was squishy and snuggly and probably wasn't even aware that he had feet. His people took him everywhere, but he was never allowed to walk. They carried him. Whenever he was in your arms he would lay quietly, watch you, sleep....snuggle. His new friend and mentor, Fun-Go B. Squiggly changed all that. I now have to watch Jack like a hawk...he thinks nothing of climbing up on the tables, kicks out drawers, beats up the girls....generally he's a brat. Little Nicodemus....was special. He just wasn't the smartest tool in the shed and never became a leader or a troublemaker. He was always busy but never instigated anything. He was a follower. If he got into trouble it was usually Mad Max or Porthos that got him there. He wasn't a waardenburg baby, no signs or symptoms. He could hear fine. He was just my special baby. Maybe, because he had been a failure to thrive, because he spent close to a week hooked up to IV's and being fed special duc soups. Maybe that's why he was slow. Maybe, some marshals are "special" Maybe, Kenai is just so busy growing, eating he doesn't have time to make trouble. As Sherry mentioned, waardenburg babies don't have to have a blaze, they don't have to be deaf....Thor is a waardenburg baby. He's ..... special.....he doesn't learn. He can't be litter trained. We tease him...he stashes his toys in the litter box because he doesn't use a litter box and figures no one else does either. He's the only furbrat who consistently seems to be able to poop in the water bowl His whole body is wrong. His legs are too short, as is his body. His head is deformed, his eyes are too close together and his head is too large (like a kit)...he's hydrocephalic. I'll bet if you hadn't had such an off the chart brainy fuzz in Koda, you wouldn't think your little boy was so dense ciao

I have a cat like that (doesn't live with me). His name is Jr. He was born outside a dumpster on Halloween. We found them just in time - one kitten had already been bitten by ants to death. His brother and sister did fine, nursed correctly. His mother rejected Jr because he was the runt. So he was bottle fed and made it through. He is.. Special. Doesn't know how to clean himself (he's a long hair) properly. Will lick one spot for hours. He gets mats in his fur, so he has to get trimmed regularly. He will walk into walls, suckle on blankets, stare into space. He is a very unique kitty, to say the least.

I don't thiunk he has Waardenberg's necessarily (and I know that they don't havet ohave certian symptoms), but I DO think he is inbred. He has a weird nose bump, a reverse blaze coming through in the shed, and a short tail! I am alos NOT complaining about his lack of climbing abilities! That is interesting that you guys have had one special turn out to be normal later.... lol more later I just hit my bick wall - time for bed.
