Hiro and Kenai are a lot a like in looks, and my boy is a deafie. I wouldn't exactly call him 'challenged' either-he's not the brightest, but he certainly is the cuddliest. And the fattest. He's our snugglefluff and I wouldn't trade him for the world, but I am afraid about the inbreeding. I hope and pray that he will not have heart or respritory issues one day. You can hear him breathe, and he often stops in the middle of playing to take 'wheeze breaks'. I've talked to the vet about it, but she says right now he seems really healthy so she can't really tell much.

Ah just looked at my post from last night. I was falling asleep. Anyways, I was saying I am not complaining about Kenai's lack of interest in climbing. HE is VERY persistent about door-scratching though. the reverse blaze...

He's just a big cuddly fattie *hugs*. Paulie is too. Also a persistent door scratcher, but not terribly interested in climbing. He is terribly interested in stealing off the coffee table. I sometimes think it isn't because he's challenged, but more that he has other ferrety interests, including being social with me.

It's interesting. I know Xeopse's(she's the one who took in those 5 lab ferrets) ferret Lulabelle had a reverse blaze like that. In fact, so does Miss Emily: Maybe her "slowness" isn't from being trapped in a fridge for an hour or so?

I don't think that marking is it...Mokkun has a reverse blaze too but he's the most brilliant of our bunch, I'm constantly having to re-work things to keep him safe! Although those two look like they have masks with the reverse blaze, and Mokkun's very much a panda, not sure if that makes a difference *shrugs* It's light for the winter

So Kenai....about him. I think he is Significantly inbred. I came to the conclusion tonight that he is most definitely challenged. I can't really explain it very well, but he is just plain SLOW. Interacting with him versus Koda there is SUCH a gap in intelligence. And I know it isn't fair to compare him to Koda, who I swear is Einstein returned as a ferret, but even compared to what I see/read of other ferret. He just isn't too bright. But I noticed something interesting too. He is changing his coat pretty noticeably, and he now has a reverse blaze! It is pretty apparent/distinct. I will try to get some pictures. Not sure if that is related (Waarenberg's?) or not, but yeah. He is just not so bright. I love him though. He is a big squishy. He had his first big "outing" today. I took the two of them on leashes to PetCo and then this other place called Paw Prince on my way to Shane's. Kenai has bee on the leash before, and I have let him run around in his harness before too so he is used to it. But he acted like he had never been on a leash before. It was pathetic. First I put them in the shopping basket, and Kenai made no move to get out (Koda always wants out haha). Then I put them on the floor to explore the lower shelves and Kenai... *facepalm* He put his chin on the floor, his front legs back, and just propelled himself with his back legs...but not even with his butt up...more like he was swimming or something...I think his fat belly was in the way. I was like Kenai..... ?? Really?! ;D Then in the next stop, Paw Prince he was totally fine and into exploring things. Granted it IS a much more relaxed environment there being a small, privately owned pet store. There was this adorable little girl there who loved the boys and talked non stop asking questions. I wanted to ask if I could bring her home with me! She was SOOOO cute! And she was totally in love with the boys and kept picking them up and loving on them and asking things about them. I want her! *must...resist...urge to kidnap!* Great, just ONE more temptation at the Pet Store. She was funny I would totally have her as my daughter. Anyways so yeah. Kenai's first big outing, and his lack of intelligence.... That's all for now I guess. Kat: So Kenai....about him. I think he is Significantly inbred. I think Kenai is just a baby; cut him some slack. He wants to eat, sleep, and eat some more because it's exhausting for Sir Chubness to grow everywhere all at once (including his brain)! And it's very true that Koda, being an RC and perhaps TOO smart - it isn't fair to compare them. Hahaha. Certainly being a MF fuzz Kenai is inbred, but being inbred does not always have to mean a dumb animal. Hybrid vigor is a huge myth - there are mutts and highly-bred animals that have ended up dumb as stumps - genetics loves to throw those wild cards around sometimes, it's just fun to simply WATCH genetics as much as possible... Since you are breeding mice you have a unique opportunity most do not - you can watch several generations in a short frame of time, it's truly fascinating. I think he'll come around, maybe not to the extent Koda does, but looking in his eyes, and after the leg-pushing thing you mentioned, I don't think he's "special", at least in the way you mean it. I knew the smartest MF fuzzy and he would sometimes lie on his tummy with his legs outstretched, and sometimes propel himself that way, but he had gears and whistles going in his brain - planning the next naughty thing he was going to do! rotfl

I always figured the armless walk has something to do with marking territory (like rubbing their belly/urine on things), my boys always do it when we go somewhere new, and even if I take them on a walk around the yard, they have a habit of going a little ways, then running back to do this to the doormat, then run a little farther out to explore, then running back to re-scent the doormat this way...I get the feeling they're reassuring themselves about where the starting point is ;D.

This is my most intelligent fuzz in his most un-intelligent pose Mad Max was one of my most intelligent fuzzes, he climbed the highest If there was trouble, Mad Max was the leader, the instigator, the instructor. Despite that he didn't necessarily always look the brightest or always make the best choices. Then you have Thor.... There is very little you can say about Thor other than somewhere, somehow something went wrong. When Thor was put together someone used spare parts and forgot something called logic. and then there was Loki, who has an opinion that says it all ciao

I wonder about my sadie at times. She takes food in to her feeding den (usually a miniscule piece) with her head held so high you'd think she caught a 40lb trout. Once she eats it (if she didn't slip and accidently leave it on the door or wall of the crate) she stands there for a few minutes licking her chops like ` hmmm what was i doing in here`, then turns around and walks away, over the food bowl. When I pick her up and shove some at her face again then she eats like she`s never seen food. She also runs around with the same fluffy mouse, this is not the issue, it`s the fact that she runs straight in to every table/sofa leg that is in the room, it almost looks like she was aiming for it hoping that this time she'll make it through platform 9 3/4.

Aaron, that was Koda not Kenai. And Kenai is special in more ways than just floor-swimming. He cannot get up on the bed (and shows little interest in trying lol). he does not understand when I open the bottom of the FN, and he is in the top. He will stand at the top door looking at me like...I swear I heard the door open? Aren't you going to take me out? (Totally ignoring Koda who Rushes "downstairs" to get out. He doesn't learn Anything very quickly at all that I have seen yet. Oh and Candice it has nothing to do with him being too tired because he is growing! haha He has PLENTY of energy! All of the energy of a kit, but in this obese, awkward body. It is hilarious watching him run around Shane's basement. he gets sooo excited he can't contain himself and just runs pointlessly back and forth, with the odd need to spin in a circle every few feet. His is so blobby and lumbering, but he moves like he thinks he weighs two pounds of pure muscle instead of 3 pounds (weighed him tonight! ) of pure fat! This makes for a very amusing combination. He is a little awkward. I love babies! ;D I don't think he is entirely..."handicapped"...but I do think that he is very slow. And yes he is still a baby, so I do still have hope for him! but as it stands right now he is just a special little guy. Oh yeah, and he has this thing - nothing to do with his intelligence, just funny. But he can't seem to stand very well in the bathtub. He is getting better, but his feet just splay out in all directions. He doesn't do it as much now as before he started hunting mice in the tub (Hmmmmm....), but he does still do it if the tub has water in the tub.

What a cute little chub machine. Haha, when you said all of this energy in this obese awkward body I was laughing! ;D He can't help it! Maybe he'll end up being an unusually big Marshall? One of the two ferrets I bathed/let swim in the tub had their feet splay in all directions, it's so cute!!

Katt, I used think Tonto was a "dumb bunny" - my fat, rolly-polly, lumbering bear who is happy to be held and carried everywhere. Then I found out it was TONTO who was stealing wheels off of the plastic bins and hiding them. It is TONTO that potties down the heat registers. It is TONTO who is always the first to solve the foraging puzzles. My sweet innocent little boy who is so skilled at looking innocent and helpless with that wide-eyed "look of innocence" on his face....boy did Tonto have ME fooled - LMAO!!!!! Make no assumptions about intelligence....Einstein flunked math!!! -jennifer
