Hi Sherry! Ruby is giving me hard time. Again! She refused to eat a soup that had only 40% of kidneys. The rest was chicken, no fish oil. I had to add FDR chicken treats to the soup to make her eating. The boys ate that soup without treats.

She is just being difficult Try not to stress about it, and don't cave in.

Now Ruby is refusing to eat even chicken/beef soup without fish oil! This time I increased amount of beef to 45%. She turned her nose on it. I gave in - added 1 tsp of fish oil. Was it a good idea? I am afraid to starve her.

Next time, let her go for an hour or so then try again. Sometimes they just need a bit of an appetite. Mine have missed a meal here and there. Unless they are sick it won't hurt them.

This is exactly what I am doing:) I try to spoon-feed Ruby before a walk. If she did not eat, I repeat that procedure after a walk. But she would not eat either until I add some fish oil or FDR chicken treats.

Okay. If it is an absolute must(as in she's skipped a couple of feedings), add as little as is possible. And each time, decrease the amount even if only by a few drops. If the FDR treats, use one or two well crumbled up and sprinkled on. Next time do the same, but remove a small bit or two. Next meal, remove 3 or 4 bits, etc.

WOW I did not know that it would be OK for a ferret to skip 2 feedings!Ruby might have insulinoma, although her vet said that she is was absolutely healthy. Are you sure that skipping a meal is OK? Meanwhile I took another approach. I made soup 20% beef, 80 chicken. First day I had to spoon feed her, then she ate while sitting at my laps, but she never eats from a bawl in cage.

Skipping is for healthy ferrets. What is her bg? And I think we are going to have to work on her eating in the cage. Start with setting the bowl and her in the cage. Stand right in front of the open door. Start spoon feeding her in the cage, but keep your hand on her back so she doesn't run off. We really need to start pushing her to chunks and a regular diet. Eating in the cage will be the first real step.

Ruby was eating chunks of chicken and turkey. The only reason that I am making a soup is to make her eat veal. As for bg, she did not have a blood test done. Should I check her blood sugar? She has been vetted 5 mo ago, just before we started the switch.

What would make you think that she has insulinoma? Okay, let's start her back to the chunks again, and use veal IN those chunks. She may accept that easier than soup now.

I read your mind! LOL We went back to chunks a couple of days ago. Not exactly chunks, but pretty close. I noticed that my fuzz butts were getting lazy - refusing to chew and waiting for soup. So, I started giving them veal in chunks plus whole chicken legs marinated in veal juice. I mix frozen veal and chicken(or turkey) in one bucket and leave them overnight to defrost. Now all my ferrets eat poultry, but Choco prefers veal.

That would be adrenal related, not insulinoma More easily treated, and not as dangerous! So she is healthy, just being a brat Okay, we are going to stick with chunks, and just add new proteins by mixing them into a favourite. So how are they doing with the marinated veal? And let's get a menu set up with what they are presently eating so they are getting some balance. Please list monday to sunday what they will be getting each meal this coming week.
