Now I have a new issue.
Brooklyn today has had mucousy clear ish poops.
Here is a pic of one;
She is less active today like she has an upset stomach. She ate chicken the night before, which she may have had a bad reaction to again.

oh nooo, not again hope she'll be fine soon... mean chicken :angrymob: she's obviously having a reaction on non organic chicken like before. we should go with quails now, since you're having problems with finding organic chicks. so sorry now you should monitor her and give her lamb or rabbit grinds to calm her tummy. try to consult a vet to give her sucralfate or some other meds if this continues.

Yeah I've given her no chicken for the last couple days. Her poops are still pretty soft and grainy, but getting better.
She is back to being active again so it looks like she feels better.

She's actually had mostly quail with bones to for sure test against her throwing up again, and duck / pheasant.
They are both slowly gaining their winter weight as well.
Do you have pictures of your cage or playroom setup?

Do they play with the dangling ropes? What's on the ends of them?
Looks like a good setup.
The quail are now full pieces of bones, such as half a leg etc, that they go and eat. It just has ground up portions that acts like the gravy if that makes sense.

no, they don't play with it. that dangling rope was only a decoration in the end, i moved it few days later. on the one end is a knot, on other was a wooden cube, and third is a ladder. upper part of it is a ladder too. but that was a failed investment! :heehee: that gravy on the quail parts DOES make sence. if they accept to eat bones that way, anything is good.eventually you can decrease the amount of gravy. was it whole quail and you made portions of it? maybe you should offer degutted mice again and try it with the gravy on top too. the chewing helps them develop healthy and strong jaw and neck muscles, and keeps their teeth clean. the chunks of bones act like nature's massage/scrub brush for the intestines, cleaning and stimulating the GI tract, opposed to grinds. Honestly, frankenprey and whole prey are much better than grinds, although grinds are also raw meat (and a waaay better then the kibble). Ferrets that are on grinds for a long period tend to become lazy eaters and do not want to work too hard to eat, and that's why you have to be persistent in offering them bones in meat (or whole prey). just remember that YOU make the rules, not them! ferrets are lazy and spoiled creatures - if they don't have to work for something they won't

i think it's time for a pop qiuzz! 1.) What are some good emergency taurine sources if you run out of heart? 2.) How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone? 3.) Do Chicken and CGH count as different types of protein? 4.) What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and how often should you give it? 5.) How long does each type of meat generally stay good: raw soup, ground meat, med-large chunks, bone-in meats, whole prey? 6.) What are the recommended percentages of heart, liver and other organ? this is not a final exam quizz, although i thing you'll be there sooner than you think and I'd love to see some updated pictures of them and their weights!

1. What are some good emergency taurine sources if you run out of heart?
Taurine powder, tongue
2. How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone?
Poop firmness; any concrete like bone hardening on poops.
3.) Do Chicken and CGH count as different types of protein?
I think it is officially the same protein, but would be encouraged as it is a different type of chicken, and probably a slightly different composition, much like a young chick vs a mature chick .
4. What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and how often should you give it?
Egg-chicken or quail eggs. Given raw whole , preferably with the shell as well if they will go and open it by themselves. Given up to 2-3x a week. Brushing also helps. Emergency would be 1/2 tsp pumpkin, 1 tsp vasoline and rotate very hour.
5.) How long does each type of meat generally stay good: raw soup, ground meat, med-large chunks, bone-in meats, whole prey?
Without looking -
Raw soup - 4 hours Grinds- 6 hours Med-large chunks- 8 hours Bone in meats - 10-12 hours Whole prey - depends on the size and if the whole prey is already cut in half, but 24-48 hours
6. What are the recommended percentages of heart, liver and other organ?
Off the top of my head:
Organs : 10% Heart : not sure on percentage , but roughly 2 hearts per ferret per week, maybe 10%?
Liver: 5% of the organs, with the other 5% being other organs to avoid too much of a buildup of vitamin A

And Harry is officially getting his winter bulk phase started. Have not had a chance to weigh them but he feels about a pound heavier. Definitely bigger than last winter.

1. What are some good emergency taurine sources if you run out of heart? Taurine powder, tongue CORRECT! if you use taurine powder the dose is 500mg per ferret per day. brain is another source of taurine, and you should use beef tongue, with brains and tongue (which is NOT rich in taurine like the heart) you should add some taurine powder.2. How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone? Poop firmness; any concrete like bone hardening on poops. correct again! If loose, give more bone. If dry, give less bone.
3.) Do Chicken and CGH count as different types of protein? I think it is officially the same protein, but would be encouraged as it is a different type of chicken, and probably a slightly different composition, much like a young chick vs a mature chick . correct, although many ferrets with sensitivities to Chicken can still eat CGH
4. What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and how often should you give it? Egg-chicken or quail eggs. Given raw whole , preferably with the shell as well if they will go and open it by themselves. Given up to 2-3x a week. Brushing also helps. Emergency would be 1/2 tsp pumpkin, 1 tsp vasoline and rotate very hour. correct, chicken egg up to 2 times a week in shedding season and quail eggs 2x2 times a week. blocage protocol should be used only if you suspect of foreign body in GI which can be hair too. -1 tbsp 100% pure canned pumpkin
followed one hour later by 1 tsp vaseline or ferret lax.
-Alternate these both hourly until the ferret has nice big gloopy orange poops (should take 2-3 hours).
This should only take about 4 hrs. If at any point during this protocol the ferret begins vomiting, or crashes, stop immediately and call the vet while you are on your way there. It has now become a total blockage and the ONLY thing that might help it pass is a barium xray. If the barium doesn't push the obstruction through then immediate surgery is essential or the ferret WILL die.
5.) How long does each type of meat generally stay good: raw soup, ground meat, med-large chunks, bone-in meats, whole prey? Without looking - Raw soup - 4 hours -6-8 hrs it lasts 8h if it's cooler inside than when it's warmGrinds- 6 hours - 8-12Med-large chunks- 8 hours - depends on their size, larger can be out up to 24hrsBone in meats - 10-12 hours -12-24 hrsWhole prey - depends on the size and if the whole prey is already cut in half, but 24-48 hours - up to 48hrs
but you did great! 6. What are the recommended percentages of heart, liver and other organ? Off the top of my head: Organs : 10% Heart : not sure on percentage , but roughly 2 hearts per ferret per week, maybe 10%? -10% is the correct answerLiver: 5% of the organs, with the other 5% being other organs to avoid too much of a buildup of vitamin A -you got it!
