Hello. How are you doing in Canada? I heard about the shooting on the news. I'm not sure how close that is to you or if you were at all effected. Also kind of random question but what city/town are you in? I have a coworker who is from Canada. She just went back to visit a few months ago. The vet prescribed 2 antibiotics. One I was able to pick up last night at Walgreens, the other I'm waiting to get in the mail from the vet. He has really runny poo, so that's what the antibiotics are for. I wonder if part of his weight is caused by the increase in pred. Now as far as making the soup....I'm worried that not adding water will kill my blender?

I am no where near what is going on. Im in Regina, Saskatchewan. I hope the antibiotics clear things up for him. Poor little guy. Weight gain - I'm not all the familiar with all of the side effects of pred. So I am not a lot of help on that. :S I would add a little bit of water so that it can blend. But think a thick paste consistency.

Hello. Happy Monday. Sorry I thought I replied to your last post but I see I didn't. I guess I just did in my head lol.
Well I cut up more pieces of chicken last night and they are a little bigger. He's eating most if not all of them. Some feedings he licks the bowl clean and others he leaves a piece or two. I thought I was gonna get to make another batch of soup but I didn't. I have everything cut up for it. So I'm gonna blend it up tonight and I will try it with much less water.
Other than that I'm still waiting for all this medication to take effect. I've stayed in communication with the vet on how everything is going. I'm really hoping to see a change in him soon from the antibiotics so that we can move on to his other problems.

I have another question. Since they can be such piggy's about the soup should I cut down on the amount I'm giving him? He currently gets 2 cubes plus a little baby food. Should I take it down to 1 cube?

It's hard to say cut it down when he has insulinoma (I find it hard to suggest this). He should have enough to snack on.. but he is eating it all in one sitting am I right? Maybe try 2 cubes AM and 1 cube PM. I think you will see a decrease in the ounces eaten once he is eating whole pieces. Keep addding more pieces, and increasing size. Think more longer narrow pieces rather than squares. They seem to prefer "strips" over "nuggets" lol if that makes any sense. I think if he is having to take his time to slow down and chew that might decrease the amount he pigs out on too. Now, I think it is time to think about adding another protein. It can be slivers that are added to his soup. Often they are more well received this way, as the soup helps to "tone down" the new taste. What would you like to try?

Yes he is eating the food all in one sitting. But I will try the idea of 2 cubes in the am and 1 at night. I like that. He does seem a little hungrier in the morning than at night lately. And the good news is I see him really eating and taking his time to chew the pieces up. Especially since the skin on the thighs does not blend up well in the blender. That's good to know to make the pieces narrow rectangles instead of squares. I will do that next time I cut meat up.
I'd be up to adding something else. When you say add another protein what exactly should I add?

It's up to you what you would like to choose. You will need to build up to a minimum of 3 proteins. Here are some ideas:*for when he is ready to eat bones and all Chicken -you are using Turkey - bone in pieces like necks, wings Quail - bone in (I can't say enough about quail. Mine all love it and I love the edible little bones) Pork - can be used as bone in (like rib ends) or boneless Beef - boneless Duck - bone in (necks, wings) or boneless Lamb - Any smaller bones can be fed (I am not as familiar with lamb, as I really only see it as lamb chops (bone would be too hard) and rack of lamb (again, I don't think mine would be able to get through those bones). But I do feed Nature's variety lamb Goat - Same idea as lamb etc... You pick what you would like to try Pork is a milder meat, as is turkey. Do you plan on feeding any commercial raws or all meats from the grocery store? (I feed most grocery store meats but do feed NV duck and NV lamb to increase my variety. These grocery store meats are $$ here, although so is the NV...) Whatever you choose can be added as slivers, just a few at a time into his chicken slivers to get him used to the new taste.

Oh, and just to add, all of the meats I listed can be used as boneless during the sliver stage. I just gave a rough list of meats to consider when we get him to the point he will be eating bones and all. That way you pick some that you can feed with bone, some you feed without. (8-9 bone in meals/week)

Hello, I wanted to keep you posted on Frisky. His health just wasn't getting better. I wasn't noticing any change at all from any of the meds the vets were giving him. And he started having his really bad coughing fits again. I contacted the vet and sent him a video of his coughing fit. He did not like what he saw and wanted Frisky to come back in. I took him back and just within about a month his cardiomyopathy had gotten worse. He heart had gotten bigger, one lung was collapsed and the other had blood in it because his heart just wasn't pumping the blood correctly. He just had so many problems. He was breathing really heavy, not to mention he had insulinoma, adrenal, and loose stools that we just couldn't clear up. It was obvious he just wasn't a happy ferret anymore. After a long conversation with the vet we decided it was best to euthanize him. I have to tell you that Frisky was like my best friend and that information absolutely killed me!!! But I had to do what was best for him. As much as I wanted him to be with me forever, I knew I couldn't be selfish and make him suffer. The vet that I took him to was the expert and not my regular vet. I was there in the morning and I left there with Frisky alive. I made an appointment at the end of the day with my regular vet to have him put down. I went by and saw my mom so she could say goodbye to him and I also took him to see my grandma. Then I spent hours just cuddling him, loving on him, and crying my eyes out. At the end of the day I took him in. Even though I have put ferrets down before this was absolutely awful!!! I still feel a bit numb and like I'm waiting for someone to pinch me and this to be over. I really appreciate all your help. I was really hoping we could have taken the raw food diet much further. But I wanted to share with you some of the last few pictures I took of him. Again thanks for everything! This is a picture of him from last Saturday 10/15 These are from his last day

Omg Kimberly, I am so very sorry. You gave Frisky a wonderful life, full of attention and love. You really did do what was beat for him, as terribly hard as it was. I have put down pets before, although not a ferret yet, but i do know how hard it is. Just remember that now Frisky is pain free, and passed after a wonderful day filled with his family - and best of all his mom by his side. DIP Frisky. My sincerest condolences Kimberly. I truly feel so sad for his passing. Working along side you these past few months has been great. And although i have never met Frisky, being your mentor made me feel a connection with him and u. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. thank you for being an amazing mentee and sharing his photos with me. He was such a sweet guy. *hugs*
