Wow that is awesome that the pet insurance will actually cover some of the cost. Do you have to pay for the surgery upfront then get reimbursed.
Fingers crossed on Sonny - hope he does well in surgery

Oh hun-please do not beat yourself up. You're doing all you can. Sonny would have gotten into it whether or not you had it put up. Ferrets are like that. They always find a way to hurt themselves! <3 You are a great fur mom and it's thank goodness there are ferrents like you out there. Chin up, sweetie. Sonny will go through this surgery like a champ. Just you wait and see! Also, what pet insurance do you have?

Holey moley! How could he have eaten one of those?? And more importantly, why? Not even soft or chewy. That is insane... Wow! My thoughts are with you

Thanks everyone those comments make me feel better. He is 8 months old and otherwise extremely healthy. I just hate surgery. Well, the rabbit ears were white and hard, so my guess is he probably thought they were bones. The insurance is called VPI. They reimburse you. They usually send the check fairly quickly.

I'll be hoping surgery goes smoothly, I didn't figure there was any other options with something so large. What a crazy ferret, I can't believe he ate them! Kind of surprised they didn't do any xray just to see where they are though? Or are xrays really expensive there, mine aren't too badly priced so we've done a lot over the years. They'd be fun to look at anyways, lol. I suppose the vet can feel them pretty well though if you can.

The thing is, why do an xray if you can feel them and you know where they are....

I'm going to drop him off and leave him there at the vets in a little while that way he can be more relaxed when they do his surgery tomorrow. I found two huge, well formed poops when I got but no bunny ears. Those things arent budging. I had a freak out crying session just now. I just lost my Lemmy in September. Sonny is a baby I love him SO much. I don't want anything to happen to him. He is the sweetest ferret and the most affectionate. I hope he pulls through ok.

He will be fine. Try to relax - you're doing such a great job. Dropping him off sounds like a good plan. Is there any reason they can't operate today?

I have 4 choices for vets. My luck: vet #1 (regular vet) is out of town #2 is out of the country and vet #3 is on maternity leave and is kind of far away #4 (the one that is doing surgery) was closed today. (he's there alone) and he doesn't feel comfortable doing surgery without staff being there to keep an eye on him afterward. But he's taking him in as an emergency. I have taken my ferrets to him in the past (he was vet #2's boss) but he's on the expensive side.

You're doing the most conscientious thing, and everybody is on your side -- Sonny's young, he's strong and after this, he'll hopefully have a bit more discretion as to what he puts into his mouth A candle and a prayer for a fast recovery.

Omg you guys. I'm so embarrassed. you are all going to kill me or laugh at me for being a hysterical idiot. Before I took him in I checked the whole house (ransacked) there was a tiny rabbit ear in a hidey hole I didn't know about. But I said "that is only one, he probably swallowed the other and that's what we felt in there." So I took him in anyway. I broke off another one of the ears from those stupid ceramic rabbits and I asked the vet to x-ray him. The tiny rabbit ear we put next to him for comparison. On the xray, the rabbit ear was bright white like a tooth. Well, there were no rabbit ears inside Sonny stomach or intestines. he did have a big hairball which he passed this afternoon. Apparently, his penis is very large and he's fat. What my husband and I felt yesterday was NOT there this afternoon. So, either he didn't swallow it at all and we were hallucinating, or he dropped a load somewhere in the house and passed the rabbit ear. So far I haven't found any Sonny turds anywhere. Anyway, sorry I freaked you guys out. Thanks for the support. I feel like you guys are the only ones that understand me. my husband thinks I'm an idiot. And poor Sonny I took his Stella a chewies away this morning and he only had water. He was so hungry. One good thing that came of this -- I guess is he was working on a decent hairball and now his pipes are squeaky clean.

Good thing is the insurance will reimburse me for my stupidity because the vet wrote "intestinal obstruction" as a tentative diagnosis.
