Ok so I stopped the duck with Mika and went to quail instead to give it a break for her. Alto is loving the bones more and more! It's so cool hearing him crunch on them I'm just going to write down my menu for this week, then I'll put it on here. I'm so close I can't wait! It's taken so long lol stubborn ferrets.

You are doing great! I'm glad that Alto is finally "getting" it! hehehe He has been a stubborn one for sure, but with everything that has gone on in his little life, it's expected.
I'm curious as to how Mika will do with the quail. She may just be off duck for a while.
I'm excited for you! It's an awesome feeling to be able to feed them the right diet and watch them loving to eat!

Ok so I finally got their menus down Mika: Mon Am: heart Pm: quail/chicken bone Tues Am: quail/chicken bone Pm: CGH bone Wed Am: chicken Pm: chicken bone Thurs Am: heart/liver/kidney Pm: chicken bone Fri Am: quail bone Pm: chicken bone Sat Am: CGH bone Pm: chicken Sun Am: liver/kidney Pm: chicken bone
Alto Mon Am: heart Pm: CGH w bone Tues Am: chicken w bone Pm: duck w bone Wed Am: CGH Pm: duck w bone Thurs Am: heart/liver/kidney Pm: chicken w bone Fri Am: duck w bone Pm: CGH w bone Sat Am: duck w bone Pm: chicken w bone Sun Am: liver/kidney Pm: duck w bone
Alto's sailys with bone on all of them, but there's only a couple pieces in each baggy. So he's getting like 2-3 ribs or a wing tip with his chunks of meat.

that menu looks good! It will be nice when you don't have to feed them separately.
How's the quail going with Mika? is she doing better than she was with the duck?

Oh yes! She's doing really good with the wail actually. I'm surprised! It's not her favourite, but she does eat it.

Well, good for her! Glad to hear it! (dance)
BTW...I'm going on a short vacation. Leaving Wednesday and coming home Sunday. I will have my computer with me and will probably check in in the evenings...but just in case we are just having too much fun I wanted to let you know.
So about your menu above, is this what they are actually eating or what you are working up to? And how are the chunk sizes going with them both?

The menu is what they are actually eating. Chunk sizes are about the size of my pointer finger for Alto now and he's really working it. And Mika I did make them a bit smaller than what she was eating before but hers is about 2" by 1" pieces. How big of chunks should I make hers? She's eating only about 1oz per feeding now instead of 1.5oz. So when I weigh her food there's 3-4 chunks on her plate.
I hope u have a good time on your holiday! Where are u going? I think I read your coming to Canada, but where exactly?

Those chunk sizes are great. You need to decide how big you want to go....I'm still working on increasing sizes with mine as I'd like to be able to throw half a bird in the cage and them eat it. That's a great menu too. I think that barring anything happening in the next week or so you should be ready to graduate soon. I'll have some questions (sort of an exam....but it's stuff you already know) for you once I get back and we can submit your menu for graduation. One thing that Heather will say is to get some sort of non-foul meat into their diet....pork or beef or lamb...something along those lines. I know that you've had some issues with these so keep this in mind and see if you can get them to eat something else in addition to the birds if you have anything on hand over the next week or so. Of course be careful because you don't want a reaction to set you back. One of the things I give on occasion is beef mince with some ground turkey and eggs mixed together. Maybe some of the organ meats could be pork or beef? Lamb is good for muscle meats....I feed lamb steaks once in a while and pork regularly.
I'm going to Vancouver for a concert on Saturday night. Queen w/ Adam Lambert singing...at Rogers Arena. But we are going up early so we can do some sight seeing and shopping. Maybe hit a few museums or art galleries. I know we are going to the aquarium at Stanley park for sure. It's going to be a fun adventure! Im so excited to get away for a bit...it's been a while.

For beef, should I look for regular ground beef or lean? I do have lean ground bee for ourselves in our freezer I could just try. I'll mix a tiny bit in their food and see what happens. I think I have lamb in the freezer too. I'll let u know how it goes the next couple days. Oh and the kidney is pork kidney so that's different. I'm sure they would do good on pork then. I should try it again.
Have an awesome time in B.C at ur concert!

I made the ferrets soup tonight so I could sneak in the ground hamburger. It worked! I added about 1/4 oz of beef maybe a bit more into their 3oz of soup. They didn't notice a thing!

Thanks, we had a great time! Sounds like the ground hamburger was a success! YAY!!! Give them the fattiest beef you can find for them..the fat is good for their skin and fur. You are really doing great! I think we are in the home stretch now. That being said, I have a few questions for you about what you have been learning! So keeping everything you have learned in mind, please answer the following questions: 1) Give 2 examples each of muscle meat, edible bones, and organs. 2) How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone? 3) What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and his often should you give it? 4) List 2 good sources of taurine. 5) How many meals a week should be organ, and of those meals how much needs to be liver?

1. Muscle meat- chicken breast and turkey thigh Bone in meat- chicken neck and whole quail Organs- liver and kidney
2. If too little bone they would get runny poops. Too much bone and their poops would be too hard.
3. Egg yolk. And a couple times a week depending on if it's shedding season or not.
4. Brains and heart
5. 1.5 meals of liver and organ per week so liver/kidney one meal and liver/kidney/heart another meal.

Oh and also, I cut up bone in meals for Alto now too. So instead of chunks of meat with a couple bones, he now has bone in meat meals! He's eating chicken wing bones too. Which is big for him...it's awesome! Sometimes he gags on it tho. Why is that?

First...flying colors on the exam! You have been a great student! 100% for you! Second...Don't ever forget that it's always trial and error for eating bones. Mine still try to eat too fast, cough it up and chew some more. that's totally normal! Mine have been totally raw fed for over a year and yet they still eat too fast or don't chew enough and have to try again. by now they have learned when something is too big and that they need to cough it back up and chew some more. Keep working on getting more red meat into their diet. The beef mince is a great start! tonight I'm going to post your last menu for graduation. Don't forget that even after you have graduated you can still count on me for support on everything. Please continue to increase the chunk sizes to what you ultimately want to get to. It has been taking Heather a bit to get to the menus so it could still be a week or so before we get a decision. I will continue to check back but once you have graduated your switching thread will be locked so no more posts will be possible. Of course you know how to get a hold of me if you need or want to.
