Katt, if you do a chip in or some drive... let me know. I'll donate stone portraits to those that help. Best I can do in my current situation. That is very generous, that would be great. *hugs* What do people do without a forum? Or rather, without THIS forum?! I don't know where I would be without the love and support of everyone here. I'm so lucky to be a part of sub a wonderful support group. This forum is like my extended family. Just an update before bed. I can finally start to breathe a little again. I woke Kenai up to feed him and he ate a lot more. At first he was really reluctant, but after he ate a bit his appetite seemed to perk up. I still had to coax him quite a bit but he at several spoonfuls of soup. It's commercial ground (I think perhaps rabbit or pheasant, it was in my prepared ziplock bags), and pork ground up with a lot of water. I loaded the soup with Ferretvite too to make it extra appealing. I tried putting him in the litter box and still no poop or pee, so I'm still anxiously awaiting that. He was so drunk and sore he couldn't even clim out of the shallow kitten box. Poor baby, he just flopped over (tripped over the ledge with his back end) and stayed where he was to sleep. I set him up with a litter spot instead by just putting newspapers on top of a rubbermaid bin lid, so it's nice and flat. I put the food bowl really close to him too so he wouldn't have to move far to eat. I'll post more updates in the morning.

Heather that's what scares me the most... I don't know what it was or how to prevent it in the future! :S Kenai ate a little this morning, but not as much as last night. I'm going to try to go home on my lunch break and feed him lunch so I know he's eating. He was a little more alert this morning but not much. He did go potty again last night so everything seems to be working on that end. Giving his meds is going to be a pain though. Since he's not super interested in food he isn't super interested in the ferretvite all over the syringe... We made quite a mess. I'll have to give him a washcloth bath tonight, he is covered in medicine and ferretvite. Poor baby. I took some pictures, I'll try to post them tonight. His incision is much longer than Koda's, prob because the vet had to do more searching around.

You may have to burrito wrap him to get anything into him, if you aren't already.

So any news from the vet as to what actually caused this?

"the overeating of slow-digesting fatty high-protein foods causes the stomach to secrete and retain copious amounts of acid. When this hyper-acidic condition occurs chronically, the stomach and intestines can become inflamed and ulcerated and the pylorus sphincter, which normally allows food to enter the duodenum, can become swollen shut. This typically leads to fermentation and putrefaction of the stomach’s contents, GERD (gastroesophogeal reflux disease), vomiting and great pain. Chronic inflammation and ulceration lead to cancer."
Kind of sounds like what happened, no? Has their diet changed at all? Maybe you have been feeding more fat than normal?

Delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis) The symptoms of delayed gastric emptying include nausea and vomiting. Poor emptying of the stomach can occur for several reasons: (1) The outlet of the stomach (the pylorus and duodenum) may be obstructed by an ulcer or tumor, or by something large and indigestible that was swallowed. (2) The pyloric sphincter at the exit of the stomach may not open enough or at the right times to allow food to pass through. This sphincter is controlled by neurological reflexes to ensure that only very tiny particles leave the stomach and also to insure that not too much acid or sugar leaves the stomach at one time, which could irritate or injure the small intestine. These reflexes depend on nerves that sometimes become damaged. (3) The normally rhythmic, 3 per minute contractions of the lower part of the stomach can become disorganized so that the contents of the stomach are not pushed towards the pyloric sphincter. This also usually has a neurological basis; the most common cause is longstanding diabetes mellitus, but in many patients the cause of delayed gastric emptying is unknown, so the diagnosis given is idiopathic (meaning cause unknown) gastroparesis

very interesting jacksmomma. i wonder what caused this in Kenai. since the vet found an ulcer, i guess that can be it? did she check his adrenal glands while she was in there?

I think the vet assumed the ulcer was caused by whatever was going on with kenai's gut, BUT it is possible that the ulcer CAUSED the pyloric sphincter to not open properly... I'm just throwing out thoughts

Oh wow, that is very helpful - ESP the first post. Thank you! The problem win going to the emergency vet is they have strange schedules. The vet who saw Kenai will not be back in until Sunday. She stayed late Sun night to do the surgery. Otherwise he would have had to wait u til the other vet who does ferret surgery came in the following night. I left a message for the vet who is in to call me but since she didn't do the surgery I don't know how much input she'll have...
