How is Meeko doing? I doubt that her spleen will enlarge any time soon. Robs never did! Rob's spleen never enlarged at all let alone ruptured. The tumors could not even form at all where it could be seen or felt. they might start in odd places like the intestine!!

Ok, sounds good, only the come frozen. It's hard to separate them to put them in batch-handy bags and keep frozen.... :S lol I think this is my biggest issue :S Thaw them out and then put them into separate baggies and refreeze. Easy You can refreeze meat without any issue. Slight degradation to the meat but nothing that can't be salvaged and it doesn't damage the taste either. ciao

Sorry- never thought to mention thawing/referring ;D I do that as well. For the eggshell, after someone has eggs for a meal, rinse the shells out, let them dry for a day and then pulverize them. I use a coffee grinder that I keep for that purpose. Other's use a mortar and pestle.

Hearts and gizzards are really easy to separate too, I find most of the time I don't even have to thaw them completely, I just run them under cold water for a few minutes and they pop right apart If you are looking for smaller quantities, you can always Check out health pet stores for hearts and organs. Pet planet never seems to have them, but if you have a tail blazer's in your area or somewhere similar they might carry some. Mountain dog foods sells a package of frozen turkey hearts (packaged with maybe 6 turkey hearts per section) and turkey livers (packaged with groups of turkey livers in sections). I prefer to use turkey anyways because there's been some new info about chickens being fed a safe form of arsenic as a growth hormone but they are just discovering now it's being converted to the toxic form of arsenic in their livers. So I try to get organic chicken livers, otherwise I use turkey just to be safe!

Really? I can thaw and refreeze? lol, Mommy always told me against it I guess I'm just doing what my mommy's told me... But if you guys to it and say it's worked for you, then safe it is! lol I don't have a coffee grinder, nor a mortar, but I'm sure I could manage to find something not to expensive We have Pet planets here, but they're not like in Calgary. They are very tiny shops in Edmonton... We do also have two Tail Blazers, but they are very small as well, though they carry loads of frozen. I could give them a call and see about the MD turkey Thanks! How much do they sell for approx? And they're good for how many mixes? Are the packages big? I only have two very small freezers They're always full with food for us, so I may have to make some room in there Thanks for the input Sandra, Lyla & Meeko

The thawing/refreezing are for us. It can alter taste and texture and as for MD, you can usually by hearts/livers in a two pack as well. So, 6 hearts per pack, 12 in total.

I actually looked into the whole thawing/refreezing issue a few weeks ago when I accidentally let a whole duck defrost in the fridge for 3 days and was worried about refreezing it. According to the FDA, food that is completely thawed in the fridge and then refrozen is perfectly safe - even for human consumption. But if you thaw on the counter you shouldn't refreeze ( for human consumption ) because of bacteria that has reproduced and won't be killed by the freezer. That being said, ferrets can handle bacteria so I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter where you thaw it, but I could be wrong. And I believe I pay like $5 for a pack of hearts (with two or three sections of hearts, can't remember) and about the same / maybe less for the liver? So not bad at all, turkey hearts are HUGE too, like 5 times the size of chicken hearts so you get more out of them too

Lol! Thanks for the info! I love it! For this first time, I couldn't wait to try it out, so I went straight to Safeway and got Chicken hearts and livers ... And a pack of chicken thighs and a pack of chicken breasts (to mix brown and white meat lol). If they like it, I will up to turkey in a heart beat! And if they don't like it, well the livers and heart were like 4$... I am making some hard boiled eggs as we speak, and then I will break up the shells and throw it all in a blender OH! I don't know if it was mentioned earlier, but... how much water do I put in for one batch of 8oz? Thanks so much! Sandra, Lyla & Meeko

It really depends on the individual ferret! Some like it thinner, some not Best bet is to make it a bit thicker, then you can always mix extra water in if they don't like it that way!

You are catching the raw-bug Before you know it you will be excited about finding different raw food, making trips to Asian markets for chicken feet and other exciting finds and even purchasing a small freezer for your ferrets' raw meats ;D (at least that's what happened to me )

Thicker? I can do that! How much do I start with to make it thick? Just a tiny bit? I'm getting a mortar tomorrow, so I think I can mix my first batch tomorrow evening! Can't wait to try it!! In the end, I'm sure I'll just add the remaining needed water along with the freeze dried... they seem to like that to be very watery lol Up to now, I've been feeding their raw in a small plate from our own plates. But today, for the first time, Meeko picked up the plate and spilled it all on the fleece lining of the cage, GRRR!!! So I took their bit of kibble out of their nice bowl, I put the raw in there, then I took an old hamster food bowl and put their kibble in there... I DATE HER TO TIP THAT BIG BOWL OVER!!! Mwahahaha!! I already have a little cube freezer, I think I will sacrifice the basket for their food lol Then, if I want to buy another freezer for their things, well... I'll have to move... there's literally no room in here! I've got 5 pets plus two humans in a 775 sq feet one bedroom condo! hahaha Up to now, Meeko's still doing great! She played with my parent's dog, Maggie, for a while too! Well... SHE thought it was playing.... I'm sure Maggie thought it was bullying... haha Oh well! Sandra, Lyla & Meeko

You may have a little problem when you first present the raw soup, just so you are aware. It will smell and taste different from what they are used to. So if they refuse it off the bat, not a worry! Just take maybe 1/2 tsp and mix it in with their freeze dried. Not enough to put them off of it, but just enough to make them think "is this different? ....Nah!" ;D
