Thank goodness for a diagnosis! At least now you know what it is and can have a game plan. Here's hoping the meds do the trick and get him under control - poor baby. Many ferrets with severe IBD do better on commercial grinds instead of Frankenprey bc it's easier to digest being already partially broken down. Whole prey is the best thing you could give an IBD fuzz (that fur is like magic), but most people can't afford an entirely whole prey diet.

i can attest to this as my babies always had diarrhea, and whole prey has helped them.
When i get them used to several rodent protein sources , i am going to try and remove all things feathered.

Once he is more stable I am going to be looking at better things for his diet. Everyone else eats raw, so he might as well too. Right now he will eat anything I give him from a syringe. He will not eat from a bowl for some reason anymore. My vet doesn't want anything changed. We were trying too many things all at once and changing meds and changing foods, adding this and adding that. Right now he is eating canned go!duck. About 30-40ml every feeding. His appetite is ravenous.

One nice thing about all of this. Is I still haven't seen a vet bill.

If anyone has any recommendations for a good probiotic I can start giving him once things are better under control. I would really appreciate it. I'd like to hopefully not have to keep him on prednisone for the rest of his life. And I was reading that a good probiotic can help with that.

He had a very bad night last night. Back to explosive diarrhea. I think he may have found some kibbles that he stashed somewhere. At least that's what I'm hoping. This happened the last time he snagged a piece of kibble before I could take it from him. My dogs ripped open two trial bags I got a few weeks ago for him to try. Before I make the drastic decision to put him to sleep, I'll watch him for the day to see if he passes any kibble. Other than that I don't know what else to do. We are hitting the IBD with all the right drugs.

We get our probiotics in liquid form from Pipingrock.com. The one we get has 10 billion live cells per 2 tbsp. you can give plain yogurt to get some of them quickly. uncle jim's duck soup also has probiotics. It may take a couple days to make a difference at those lower levels where you can syringe the liquid form.

when i feed my senior duck with ribs it is a pile of bones in a watery diarrhea
Have you tried a little lamb gerber baby food in your mix or some beef gerber?
Beechnut is better--no added stuff.
I almost went crazy trying to get formed stools for mine.
(Just throwing out ideas, sorry)

I will hit the stores tomorrow. I know when I feed my other ferrets duck, their poop is icky. I was thinking about that today. So maybe some turkey. Lamb was one of the main ingredients in his old kibble. Chicken might even be fine as he never really ever ate chicken. His bout was because he found some kibbles. Once that was out of his system things started to get better. My vet and I decided to divide his prednisone into three doses a day. The every 12 hours would stop working after 8 hours. Want to try to keep the inflammation down so he can heal and feel better. But he did some damage with those stupid kibbles. We are back to square one, where he is absorbing fluids atleast, but nutrients not so much yet. He is getting something out of it, but not what he was, the poop is not quite the right colour. He was feeling so good Wednesday night he climbed up the bed to sleep with me. He crawled under the blankets and layed against my leg.

A www poor guy. It's such a trying tedious process to do elimination diets but it's worth it in the end. You are doing a great job! :goodjob:

Yes he is on carafate/sulcrate. Don't want ulcers as well as everything that's going on. This is the most frustrating illness ever. Seriously I would take anything but this. I just can't get it under control.

I'm going to put him back on the recovery. He really did the best with that food. It's also easier to syringe to him. I don't have to add water either. I'm going back to what got everything under control in the first place. Which was recovery, prednisone, and metronidazole. Maybe duck is just too rich for him.
