I'm taking sunny bear in for surgery this morning. My vet doesn't know yet, but we sorta talked about it last night. I'm watching him waste away. There is no way it's what we thought. Not a parasite, not helicobacter. We need to get to the bottom of this while he still has some strength, because I'm afraid that he's not going to be here when I wake up every morning.

Everything looks perfect. No inflammation. Organs all perfect. But for whatever reason his stomach is emptying food into his intestines before it is digested.

Any suggestions as to how to deal with this? Sometimes when you do surgery, you know you're hoping that it's just something simple...finding more questions is just heart rending ciao

I have no idea, she has no idea. She found Undigested pieces of kibble in his intestines. All she can suggest is digestive enzymes and NO kibble, just easy to digest bland food, restrict his water, as that is what keeps shooting out when he goes poop. He's on iv antibiotics now, maybe that will help as he doesn't have to absorb it. She will leave it in when I take him home tomorrow so I can continue iv fluids and antibiotics. The only thing that I can think of is helicobacter infection. Because the little buggers lower the acidity in the stomach, making it harder to break down food. Yet, all his blood work came back perfect. No elevated white blood cells, liver enzymes all good. I need to figure out something fast to get nutrition into him though, because not only will he continue wasting, he will not heal from the surgery.

I'm hoping it might be pancreatitis. And the iv antibiotics will clear it up. As for the other ferrets that had diarrhe, I'm wondering if they could sense my stress.

His food doesn't sit in his stomach too long though. It's all normal times that a ferret goes. Its just not being broken down, which is why it is shooting through. His poop has no smell to it at all. Not being broken down like it is supposed to. Wether it is from lack of probiotics, or pancreatic enzymes, I don't know. But today when I went to hold him after his surgery. They set up a heating pad on my lap and let me sit with him. He pooped all over me. And man oh man, it actually had a smell. I don't know if that was because he never got his antibiotics this morning, or because he got an iv antibiotics when he was under anesthesia.

Thinking he has exocrine pancreatic deficiency. Which is when the pancreas doesn't make sufficient digestive enzymes. It makes sense, full pieces of food not broken down passing in watery stool, or when it looks "better" it looks like cow patties. He's going to start on digestive enzymes and a bland easy to digest food. Then I'll hopefully switch him over to a turkey or lamb raw soupie. I'll have to keep his teeth cleaned, but I don't care. Right now I just want him to gain some weight and play again.
