heather is correct. this is beyond anything you can do at home with soupies. she won't even eat it and she is so nauseous that she is hurting herself. her bg is too low and that is why she is acting this way, having diarrhea, etc. she is pawing frantically at her mouth because she is completely nauseous. she gags and won't eat because she's nauseous. this really is an emergency at this point. i emailed you before earlier today. i read your email from last night where you said you were not sure if she was going to make it through the night. i guess she did make it through the night. but without food and medications she will not last much longer. sorry to be so blunt but it is the sad truth. not sure if you received my email before. if you can't get her the pred in her today, then you need to give her food with ferretvite or nutrical in it, something to get her bg up or she will fall into a coma. they say to hold out and not give sugar ,etc unless you are having an emergency, well, you are having an emergency. you need to do this food, nutrical or/ferret vite mix every 4 to 5 hours until you can get pred into her. also give her pedialyte as i am SURE she is dehydrated with not eating and with diarrhea. leave a bowl of half pedialyte and half water next to her bed. sorry to scare you but this will kill her. you don't want it to get to a screaming insulinoma seizure/coma point and i am afraid that she has not eaten nearly enough in the past few days. so she's getting there. she is suffering. please take her to a vet. even if the vet is not a ferret expert often times there are vets that will know just enough about ferrets that they know how to treat insulinoma. it is such a common medical condition in ferrets that i am sure every dog and cat vet (that sees ferrets also) has run into it in the past. the vet needs to check her bg and then prescribe pediapred.

I'm thinking at this point that this little one is so dehydrated that IV will be necessary. There comes a point in dehydration where the body will reject any fluids coming orally. If you can get fluids into this little one her appetite will also get better. I've held a ferret in full seizure mode, it is scary This was my little Zena. I couldn't get her to respond to all the normal methods to bring them around, so it was a mad 1 hr drive to get her to the vet (good thing the radar wasn't out ) The reason why she didn't respond....it was a brain tumour ciao

just got a dose of pred in her. hopefully it will help, how long til it usually kicks in and how will i know that it is?? she is still trying to drink water from her bottle but not nearly enough, i have to go back out to work in a bit and will pick up the clear pedialyte while i am out...while her poop is still green and diahrea it is not quite so diahrea-ish if that makes sense...before it was just blah and now it is blah almost in a line... not sure it that is better or not?

you already gave her pred so just wait and see if that works. it should work within a few hours. is she moving around at all? walking? anything?

as to how fast the pred will work i can't really answer that question. i've seen it work within 2 hours. but it is hard to tell you because i don't know what her blood glucose level is to begin with and i don't know the dose that you gave her. but if it "works" then she should start acting normal. eating, walking around, etc. and no longer pawing at the mouth. it should increase her appetite dramatically as that is what i have seen with ferrets on pred. did a vet actually see her before he prescribed the pred? is this Pediapred? is it a liquid? pill? did someone tell you how much do give, etc.?

i REALLY think you should take her to a vet though. because she may be dehydrated. what happens when you pinch her skin? does it go down fast or does it stay up like tented?

I agree- she still needs to be seen. And fast. What has been happening will continue to happen unless you get the correct dosage for her pred from the vet. And she will most likely need sub-q fluids.

I got 2 tsp of baby food in her both last night and this morning, I also put pedialyte in her water which she drank on her own with out gagging. She was still a bit nauseuos after eating but not nearly as bad as she was. Her dry food was messed up a bit (i leveled it out before I went to bed) and a couple pieces were broken up so it looks like she was investigating her food a little . She is alert, and pooped (still diahrea) and peed alot... So hopefully if one night on the meds made her feel better a day on it will make her feel even better than that...

So, I gather a vet has given you the correct dosage for her then? I'm glad she's feeling better, though.

Please keep us posted as pred should never be given on an empty stomach or without some type of tummy protection medications. You need to get her to a vet to find out what her BG is and get the proper dosage of pred. for her. If it's too much or isn't given properly it will result in ulceration of the gastro intestinal tract and you will find yourself in deeper water still ciao

The pred origionally seemed to be helping Tink's nausea but she is still gagging, we've uped her dose but still no good so I am taking her back to the vet tomorrow... If she doesnt improve...I dont want her to suffer anymore...

I think there may be something else going on. Either that or the pred dose is off. if pred doesn't work then you can use proglycem (diazoxide). It really sucks that she is still gagging.
