hi hows mum doing this morning and the surviving kit? the rounded belly could as others have said be from retained kits or it could be due to her eating the dead babies and after births ( are you sure there was only 3 born is it possible she has had more still born and ate those too ?) I have had litters to young jills where only three kits have been born ( this was due to short mating time and the jill carrying huge hobs ) has she passed any poop and does the kit seem to be suckling ? also does mum seem restless at all or is she simply content to go to the poop corner and hurry back to her nest ? sorry there seems so many questions but simply trying to get a good idea of how she is acting take care bye for now Bev

Thanks for popping in Bev. Your advice is also appreciated. This is a really "grey" area for me. I bow to the knowledge of the breeders on this board. You guys are fantastic ciao

No problem heather always happy to help I forgot to add if mum still appears restless you can take her and the kit to your vet who will do an ultrasound for you to see if there are any more in there in the uk the price varies ( depending on area any where from £40-£100 ) please let us know how she is doing take care bye for now Bev

ahhh thank you all so much for your help and comments, she doesn't seem restless at all, she has pooped lots, a little darker brown than usual, she is not rushing back like mad to get to the kit, she has enjoyed lots of strokes and cuddles, and took time out to eat some chicken, she does did go back to the kit when she heard it squeaking, the kit doesn't look large and neither did the 2 dead ones. its 10.30 at night here in the uk, stinky has settled down for the night with her 1 kit, i had a good feel of her belly and to be honest, im not sure if i could feel anything or not, i think it would be in her best interest to just pop her to the vet in the morning, my gut instinct is telling me her tummy just is not right so i guess it is better to be safe than sorry i cant be 100% sure that 3 was all she had as the 2 dead ones do appear to have been eaten, so it is a possibility that she may have eaten more. thanks again for all your help and i will keep you informed, thanks, donna

If in doubt, a vet is usually your best bet. Fingers crossed she's fine! And yes- please keep us updated.

WHen you go to the vet, bring mom and kit in a dark "nest". That will be safest for not. Separating mom and kit iis not a good idea - the kit will get cold and stressed. mom will stress without baby was ell. They shouldd be together at all time right now.

hello again, just to let you know i phoned the vet first thing this morning and the vet has told me not to bring her in as she is acting fine within her self, the vet said as she is showing no sighs of discomfort i should not move her and kit and that (as someone said) she may be bloated from eating the dead kits, i am watching her very closely (probably to closely for her liking) she is still in great spirit, eating, drinking, nursing and pooping fine, she even mistaked my thumb for the baby this morning and would not let go, pulling and pulling, i couldn't help but laugh, thanks again donna

She's SOO cute and so petite. How old is the mother? I'm glad that her and the baby are doing well so far. *fingers and paws crossed that her post-birth recuperation goes well. Hahaha.. A little side note.. I find it funny that she's standing in front of a pregnancy book in the photo. Heh heh heh.. My ADD a** would notice that. ;D Anywho.. Can't wait for lots of mother/baby bonding photos!

i love this picture of her it was taken about 6 months ago and yes how ironic that she is in front of a pregnancy book ( that was mine not hers haha ) , she is 4 years old, she is a little dainty but i think the ferrets here in the uk are a little smaller than other countries, she might be small but she puts my boxer dog in her place, poor dog runs like mad when she sees her coming haha
