Basil and Cybill are parents again this year...12 kits were born Sunday night. Two tiny ones didn't make it, but hte remaining 10 are strong and active. Unlike last year, when Cybill would only allow me to handle the kits in the sleep sack for the first 6 days, she has no problem this year with me checking and weighing them twice a day while she's focused on eating.
Basil is also the sire of 4 kits in CO (born last Friday) from a very nice sable jill with an outstanding temperament and personality. I'll get to see them at 12 weeks when their owner brings them here so I can pick my stud fee kit.

I was finally able to sex them this morning while Cybill was gobbling down a mouse...there are 3 hobs and 7 jills. Cybill took me seriously this year about giving me mostly jills. I'm concerned about 3 tiny ones who haven't gained weight in the last 24 hours, but the rest are gaining slowly...with 10 to nurse, these won't put on weight as fast as a smaller litter would. I'd really hoped for a smaller litter this year, but no such luck.
I have already approved a few prospective owners and some of the kits are spoken for, but won't know how many are actually sold until I ask for deposits when they're 2 weeks old. The jills will be the hardest to place, as they'll need experienced owners who can cope with intelligent jills with a strong will if they're anything like their older sister. Cricket is still as much of a little hellion as she was as a young kit. <G>
Jackie, Basil and Cybill are supposed to be from generations of captive bred polecats. They're definitely not pure polecats, but most likely high content hybrids as they have the polecat small, stocky, and well muscled bodies but with distinctly ferret faces, lacking the typical polecat skull formation and frontally placed eyes.
They both can be readily handled and interacted with by anyone, although Cybill is more reserved with strangers than is Basil. Basil has never nipped or bitten for any reason, but Cybill does like to nip my big toe if I'm on the computer and ignore her. Most of their kits from last year are like their father. The 3 exceptions are the really intelligent ones...Raven, whom I kept, plus Onyx and Cricket, whom NancyL has. Those three still believe that nipping unexpectedly and watching the subsequent reaction is a fun game, and neither of us has been able to convince them otherwise.
Sorry, guys, no pics until they're old enough to have visitors...I still don't have a camera and I'm going to be buying a lot of chicken, rabbit, mice, and NV medallions in the next few months.
Basil and Cybill are both very dark sables with black noses (there are links to pics of them the night they arrived from the UK on this forum in a post last year) and their kits will range from medium dark sables to as dark as their parents. I breed only fully pigmented sables which are free of carrying the dilute or white marked genetics, in order to avoid the health and genetic problems associated with those colors and pattens.
IIRC, I posted links to pics of last year's litter at almost 7 weeks, and around 3 months old or so. NancyL posted pics of Onyx, Cricket, and Raven at 5 months old last October.
