I have been noticing that a lot of you have ferrets who like to snorkel and enjoy water. I was wondering if a ferret swimming pool would be an okay item for a ferret room. I am thinking of a long, shallow pan (maybe a cat-sized litter box) with just a couple inches of water and maybe some ping pong balls for playing. All on a towel or bath mat of course! I'm just wondering if this would be safe to have available to ferrets in a ferret room all the time (i.e. when I'm not there) or if water play should be a supervised event only, or if this would be too messy to even consider.

Should be fine since they'll empty it pretty quickly ;D That said- it really should only be used under supervision, just in case

I had one in my ferret room and the kids loved it. I would fill it with ice cube and Dixie would go crazy trying to stash them (only to realize they were gone when she returned). It was actually a large glass baking dish. I would put open Easter eggs in the water and they would fish them all out.
Beware, it can get messy! I wouldn't recommend for carpet.

If we get ferrets we are planning on pulling up the carpet, so no worries there. I thought it might be a good idea because while my house never goes above 80, it does get into the upper 70s sometimes. And if they're going to be freeroaming the room I don't want a fan, fans mean cords...

I've allowed my wee ones to go paddling or swimming on really hot days. The really hot days, the swimming escapades are held inside. I use a super large cat litter pan. I had hardwood floors in these pics, so I just used a comforter and towels to absorb some of the spilled water. Just be prepared to have water everywhere. Some are really enthusiastic about their retrieving activities. This is the swimming pool that was set up in the ferret play space outdoors. ciao

I got a large plastic tray that's about 6in deep for about $5 at Lowes. On warmer days I put a few ice cubes in a bowl, and then put about 1in of water in the tray, with the bowl in the middle. Wheatley loves ice cubes, but he hates getting his feet wet. Sometimes I worry that this is more for my entertainment than theirs, but I love watching them problem solve. (i.e., he waits until Charlotte is sniffing at the water, then pushes her in so she moves the bowl and he can get at the cubes) ;D

I guess I will wait and see how my ferrets feel about water and go from there! It sounds like fun, though.

Best way I've found to get them interested in water play is to put their favourite oil in the bottom of bottle caps and float them on top of the water ;D It's hilarious watching them try to reach the caps without getting wet!

Sherry thats a wicked idea with the floating caps of oil, I may just try it with my two although with my luck she and pandora will squabble and one of them will end up pushed in LOL.

Marley and Freya LOVE their "ferret pond" (indoor toy haha) Freya likes to fetch jingly balls and shiny hermit crab shells. Marley likes to fetch hard plastic teething rings and those plastic shapes that kids sort. I put the smaller plastic container in the middle sometimes because my kids also dislike getting their feet wet (the day that Soxx wardanced Marley into the water bucket...oh geeze...I fell over laughing). They use it as a boat of sorts to get the toys that are in the middle ;D
