I'm certain those of you who either refuse to vaccinate the ferrets at all or not until 5-6 months later (and not annually after that) have had some sort of trouble discussing the matter with your vet? Did they guilt trip you or anything, claim you are irresponsible for your decisions? I'm just curious because after reading the different threads linked to the vaccines, I'd like to wait those 5-6 months before giving them the one distemper shot (and then rabies..3 weeks later?). I personally wouldn't like to take poop from my vet, so to speak, over this matter. I feel as though any vet would feel the same way. :/

My current vet has no problem with it. In fact he even advised against vaccinations unless he was going to be living outdoors. I have brought up the raw diet yet, I'm sure he will have some thing to say about that

That's a good point, and if my ferrets were exposed to the outside very little I'd go ahead and say no..then again it may be a lawful requirement either way here in Ontario. That and my ferrets would likely be exposed to the outside a little anyways, not just for means of fresh air/getting out, but small travel distance, possibly bringing them to my uncle's trailer, etc.

One of the vets at least at my clinic understands not doing distemper for ferrets because of how dangerous it is. The exotics vet did say it needs to be bolstered (after the initial one they get at the pet store) but I'm not sure how he feels about after that.

I mentioned that I am trying to switch Bode to raw to my vet today and he said "Oh, good!". Haha. I don't understand how a vet could see feeding a natural diet as a problem.
As for the vaccines, next time I am there I'm going to ask his opinion on them.
However, I would suggest just explaining everything you've read in great detail and why you are choosing not to vaccinate as often. You are the owner, after all.

I don't bother to bring it up. If they do then we talk about it. It's something that I learned when I first started raw feeding...I'm rather non-confrontational ciao

I simply state my choice.

Me too. After all we are talking about MY pets, and the decision is mine. They only can push on the vaccine what is required by law. My dog's vet is a holistic vet, so she's pretty good not pushing me on anything though. Her office just added an "exotic vet", so I am taking my Chestnut next week to meet her and just to get a feeling.

I've been looking into a holistic vet in the Barrie, ON area myself, seems there's only one. I'm not too worried about he/she will respond to my decision, or the fact that I'm going to have them raw fed. Do holistic vets have the similar vaccines to others, like purevax and whatnot? Or do they actually have different means?

Depends on how holistic they are. I've met "holistic vets" who figure if they offer a couple of homeopathic remedies and some gentle message as treatments they're holistic. They still offer the full vaccine series and they're just has heavy handed about it as some of the allopathic vets. Good luck, I hope you find a good one. There are some awesome ones but just like the regular vets there are some that are just "out there" and cutting themselves in on a market ciao

...I emailed them and apparently they don't even treat ferrets.

I've not been able to find a holistic vet locally either who treats ferrets, or is even willing to learn
