any one have ideas on how to help Melinda's itchies? between shedding season and adrenal, her skin and what's left of her fur is really dry. She gets her melatonin daily in a mix of 'tone and EVOO, and I put EVOO in their meat at least 3 times a week. would giving her more oil or a different kind help her skin? or is there some kind of lotion or oil that could be put on her?

I get better results with a protein oil, especially with the adrenal kids during shed time. Fish, salmon...any of those ciao

I put coconut oil on Craven's skin when he was all hairless and really dry. Fish oil in their diet as well.

Reishi helps a LOT with the adrenal itchies. "Adrenal itchies" are not solely the result of dry skin. Adrenal itchies are also caused by an elevation in histamines. Tis elevation in histamines commonly results in mast cell tumors in adrenal ferrets as well. I use either of the follwing products: New Chapter reishi Host Defense reishi Dosing for either product = 1/4 capsule daily per ferret. This is what I consider to be a "medicinal dose" for 2 days or weekly to maintain control of symptoms. The required dose varied by ferret. Fish oil helps a lot with dry skin. I highly recommend Thorne Research Super EPA. Dosing = 4 - 6 drops per ferret per day. that's about 1/4 capsule per ferret per day. Here are the reasons why I like the Super EPA: * recommended y my holistic vet * toxins removed (heavy metals/PCB's, etc.) * Capsules are better than bottles because oils in bottle are exposed to air, which deteriorates the oil over time. * Easier to digest than regular fish oil. (ferrets have a fast digestive system and sometimes poop out a lot of nutrition - I have tried a lot of fish oils on myself and on my ferrets. The ferrets seem to digest this product better than others (they seem to have greasier stools with other products) I seem to have mild arthritis in my hands during cold weather, and the Super EPA gets rid of all stffness/pain. Other fish oils did not do this.....and I experimented by stopping the EPA - the symptoms returned. Also this is the only fish oil I can take without burping - I do take the oil with a snack. The other fish oils (ever the ones that are not supposed to cause burping) are unacceptable to my gut -jennifer

I've actually noticed a marked decrease in Zeus' itchies since I've started adding reishi into his food as well. I was adding it originally for the possible malignancy from his adrenal, but it has worked that way also.

You guys are so wonderful!!! I've been depressed all day but just reading your responses has helped give me a little ray of hope. I stopped by the vet's office this morning to pick up medicine for Riley. While I was there, I asked the vet's assistant about the des implants - he told me they hadn't been ordered He said he had gotten all of the info and even talked to someone in Australia about getting them. He said he gave all the info to the vet who was supposed to talk to me about the cost, etc...So, after waiting over a month already, I'm back to square one. For some reason talking to the assistant gave me the idea that they weren't going to order them. He said he'd have the vet call me on Monday. I'm thinking that I will have to pay for the whole lot up front if I can get them at all... and right now my finances are so strained just dealing with the dog and all her meds and tests I'm not sure if I will be able to swing it. I'm going to try calling the one ferret "specialist" that I know of here and see if maybe by some miracle she's gotten them... I'm so not happy about this... Hopefully, with all of your suggestions, I can at least keep my babies more comfortable. How hard is it get the melatonin implants and how expensive are they? Would that be a good thing to look into at this point?

Melatonin implants are easy to get. Your vet should have turn in stock. Most ferret vets do. They are manufactured by Melatek. They need to be reimplanted every 4 months with those. Can you drive to broward county? OR have your vet call Dr. Susan Kelleher at Broward Avian & Exotic & ask her if she can sell him a des implant so he can implant your ferret. She can also walk him through the procedure on how to order. Or if he wants to place an order through her. Idk. Just giving you ideas. There is a vet in Orlando that carries the deslorelin implants. I'll get you the name.

Miamiferret2, thanks for the info.... still checking to see if anyone around here has it but it looks like I may be checking into the Orlando vet soon... Jennifer, I really appreciate your recommendations. One question - HOW do you get them to take the reishi??? I have ordered the brands you suggested but bought others just to start in the meantime. When I put just a little in their food (and mixed it up well) none of them would touch it. Melinda actually got a little in her mouth (before it was all mixed) and actually started foaming and pawing at her face like she was poisoned (Maybe the New Chapter isn't as nasty?) None of my kids like fish oil either but their reactions aren't quite as extreme so I'm hoping they will get used to it eventually.

Eva had super flaky itchy skin with her adrenal. She got a melatonin implant 1/3/12 she gets EVOO cut with soybean oil daily and a capsule of fish oil (punctured on a dish) once a week. Her skin is no longer dry and flaky and her fur is working on getting softer. She was fed horrible food on top of being adrenal so it will be awhile yet before her coat is as good as my 4 raw kids.
Her new coat on her neck/shoulders/head where she was bald is soft like a bunny though.

Glynus- how much reishi are you giving? Dose would be 1/4 capsule per ferret daily.

Oh well- there goes that idea! I'd been thinking if there was too much in they may turn their noses up at it!
