I'll tell you the story of Corky. I raise chickens and often I hatch out new babies. I had a hatch once, and the strangest thing happened. One of the chicks was born with the top half of her beak missing up to her nose. I was worried we would have to cull her. I never cull a chick unless it is deformed to the point it couldn't live at least a half way normal life. (situations like neck defects so bad the chick couldn't keep upright and kept flipping on it's back not to mention the neck had his head cocked back all funny) Any way, I kept an eye on her. She got steady on her feet just fine and cheeping up a storm. Looked so far so good. Nothing else seemed wrong with her. the nest day when it was time to get the chicks eating and drinking I set about doing like I always do to teach the chicks to eat. Set a bowl in the brooder and tapped at the food so they saw it as momma showing where the food was. I'll be danged if she didn't eat just fine! She also was drinking just fine too! Her missing beak didn't seem to bother her in any way. She lived just fine. She didn't even know there was anything wrong with her. She did end up being tiny. WAY smaller than a standard size Chicken and she was the sweetest thing. Best chicken ever! She would follow us around the yard liked to be petted and would ride around on our shoulder. Sadly she was eaten by a predator. But had she not gotten eaten she would have lived a long time with only part of a top beak. I don't think Dexter having a jaw problem will lessen the quality of life you can give him. especially if you can give him a diet that makes eating easier on him than kibble. Here is a pic and a vid of Corky for you.

thankyou guys, *so* much. Vet says Dex had his jaw broken when he was younger and it didn't heal properly.. Have him on mushy kibble ands soupies. They resold for 150.. Wouldn't drop the price anymore, a bit ridiculous imo.. He is injured and they sold me an 'unhealthy' animal.. but I don't care.. I bought him back. He's in my arms right now. Loves his new ferret nation too. Will his jaw be able to be fixed, or will he forever be on mushy food and soup? Regardless, I'm happy to see him home with you!

I think a lot will depend on how he adapts as he grows.

YEs, new pictures ARE in order! And in complete honesty, I think I am going to leave it at this. People don't take teenagers seriously, and my rents aren't going to help me fight the fight. I am just glad I got Dex back and he's not going to be sold to some moron.. The vet said as long as he is kept on mushy food he shouldn't develop any arthritis and what not.. So he will be kept on soft food and in time I will see how things go. For now, he is doing just fine! Question: Since he can't fully open his jaw does this mean he will always have to be an only ferret? He can bite HARD. He latched onto me the other day and left a deep mark.. Bled a bit.. He's still in training, it's a bit harder since he's a deafy but he's getting better! I would like to own another ferret someday, but does his jaw problem mean he won't be able to defend himself? I would never want to put him in harms way. Just wondering for the future. He can sure still pack a punch though, when he wants to!

I'm so glad he's back home. He may do best on a soft diet since he he may eat less when he has to "battle" with his food. The commercial raw diets may work well for him.

If he can bite you he can bite another ferret. It is hard to say, but honestly I think he would be fine with another ferret. They use more than their teeth to defend themselves. Just let him pick his own buddy if you can and that might help. Hopefully someone else will chime in too.

I don't see any issue with getting him a buddy except to make sure he gets enough to eat. With his jaw issue he'll probably eat more slowly than most ferrets so just keep on eye out to make sure he's getting his share.

Totally agree. There should be no reason Dexter can have a buddy. I'm sure he can defend himself just fine
