So, as most of you may know, Dexter was having jaw issues and Heather and a couple other people on the forum helped me to possibly understand what might be going on. Due to his coat markings, he may have a gentic deformity in his jaw. I took him back to the store yesterday morning and the store owner is taking him to the vet this afternoon. He's going to give me a call and let me know what's going on... This sucks so much.. I don't want to be a whiney b*tch at all. But this is so unfair. Dexter DID NOT deserve this. He's such a sweet weasel.. He was perfect. He is perfect. After working so hard to convince my mom to let me have one, and then saving up all my money, and getting him.. It just shouldn't end like this. There has to be some light. I pray there is light at the end of this tunnel, and in NO way shape or form am I the least bit religous. I just want a good outcome for my baby.. I think I did something not so good on a whim yesterday. I went out and bought a two story FN. My father paid the difference (since I didn't have enough) and now I owe him $95. I spent about two hours putting it together. It's huge, it's gorgeous, and I love it. But when I was done, I went upstairs to my room and it all just hit me. I cried, hard. Anytime i'm not occupying myself, I start thinking of Dexter and just get generally upset. It's so weird no hearing his little bell jingling as he runs around and explores my room. It's weird not waking up and running downstairs to go see him and let him out for playtime before school. He gave me something to look forward to.. And now he's gone. And it's over something that could've been prevented. I am just disgusted. All those poor weasels out there.. I hate people.

What is the pet store going to do with him? If the vet confirms that there is a congenital defect, what will they do? What do you want them to do if a congenital defect is identified?
I know that, in the states, pet stores will have animals destroyed if they perceive they cannot sell them. Please make sure that the pet store understands that this is now YOUR animal, and you want him back regardless of any issue he may have. Many differences with facial structure/teeth, and they get along just fine even if they have modified eating behaviors.

They are planning on euthanizing him, I assume. They refunded him, so I am not sure if they will give him back IF he does have a structural problem.. Lyle (store manager) will give me a call tonight.

If he isn't going to live a happy, fullfilled life, than maybe euthanzia is the best option.. I guess it depends the degree of it.

It does depend on the severity of the deformation. I can understand your anger and frustration over this whole thing. This should have been a wonderful experience for you, and it's turned into something of a nightmare of fear and grief. You are allowed to be angry. Here's hoping it's not too bad, and you can get him back again. But...whatever the outcome, please don't turn away from getting another ferret at some point. No, it will never be Dexter- but there are a lot of babies out there who need the type of loving environment you would provide.

Whats wrong with his jaw? My Lily has a jaw deformity and she does just fine. She is 3 years old now. Grinds her teeth when she eats, but that is it.

I just watched the video, and he does look uncomfortable when he eats. He would probably do much better on a liquid diet, but there are issues that come with sustaining an animal on a liquid diet. I do have my fingers crossed that perhaps there could be a tooth coming in incorrectly in that back of the jaw or something they can fix. SherryLynne has already expressed my feelings better than I can....sending fert prayer to you and Dexter. -jennifer

DookDook, I'm soooo sorry. I hate hearing stories like this because they are so preventable. You did everything right and now have to deal with a broken heart because of some greedy bastards who only care about the bottom line. But Dexter has made it this far with his condition. He's made it through the trauma of being taken from his mother too young and being neutered too young. He is strong, he has to be or he wouldn't still be around. He also doesn't look like he's starving in his pictures - he looks perfect, actually. This condition may make him eat a little different from other ferrets but he's getting the job done. Ferrets are certainly adaptable

thankyou guys, *so* much. Vet says Dex had his jaw broken when he was younger and it didn't heal properly.. Have him on mushy kibble ands soupies. They resold for 150.. Wouldn't drop the price anymore, a bit ridiculous imo.. He is injured and they sold me an 'unhealthy' animal.. but I don't care.. I bought him back. He's in my arms right now. Loves his new ferret nation too.

YAY DEXTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy to hear he is back!
Wow, 150?! Most pet stores around me sell them for $100 or $80. Either way, that is terrible they wouldn't let you have him for cheaper since they put you and him in so much pain.
At least he is back though. =]
