I'm glad to see you have gotten Dex back! I've been following this thread and it is messed up they can sell an animal like that in good conscience. Poor guy. I think you should have definitely got a discount. When I got Evelyn from a pet store, they were going to send her back to MF because she had a prolapsed rectum, but they sold her to me $30 off. I couldn't let them send her back, not when a prolapse can be treated so easily! Not to mention I was in love with her. But either way, you got him back and I know he is in good hands now.

I'm so glad you have him back. Poor wee thing. You are a true ferrant, sweety...sick or not we take them in. Have to question our sanity but you can't question our humanitarianism I will be honest though, I'm furious at the pet store. I'm beyond furious. That is the most disgusting thing and price I have ever heard. A ferret goes for $80 wholesale, sometimes even less than that. They charged you for the vet fee the ^&*&%^$%$^%#%$@#%!~!! and probably still made money. EWWWWEWW.!! {stomps feet and throws major tantrum} Despite my rant, sweety....I'm glad that you got Dexter. Every fuzz needs someone to love and I would have taken him in too. What special care is he going to need? We will help you if we can design a special diet if that's what he needs. ciao

Vet says Dex had his jaw broken when he was younger and it didn't heal properly.. I really find that very hard to believe. I think it's far more probable that his jaw problem is the typical congenital jaw malformation so common in those with the panda genetics. I'd suggest you call Marshall Farms and talk to them directly. There's a good chance that they'll refund what you paid for him and let you keep him, especially if he's also deaf. Edited because I didn't realize he was an RC ferret. The same advice, call them and talk to them directly as you should not have to pay for a ferret with one, probably two, congenital defects.

I agree with Joan. Call RC ferrets (though I'm not sure there is contact information readily available, the pet store should have access to their representative) Whether the jaw is broken or it is indeed some congenital defect the place of origin should be notified. This wee one is not a toaster with a defective hinge, he's a living breathing creature. If his jaw was indeed broken, someone needs to be held responsible, if it's a congenital defect then the "manufacturer " needs to be made aware that selling this type of "defective product" is not acceptable and he needs compensation and even medical support. This is probably too much to expect from them, but they need to be aware that this is happening. The store isn't going to say anything, they got their money....they don't care RC ferrets have been known to be particularly callous about their ferrets in the past, so don't expect much. They shut down their Hagen branch because of health issues and other problems and became RC ferrets. It's even difficult to find that much out about them. Do push the envelope if you can, find a way because they do deserve to be notified that this type of thing is happening and people are becoming aware of it and aren't happy about it. ciao

I would also ask the petstore owner for the vet report and x-rays...or at least the vets info so you can obtain the diagnosis and x-rays that way...that way when you do deal with RC, if you do that is, you have a professionals diagnosis and can scan and email the x-rays to them...

I thought that RC ferrets had closed down? www.holisticferret60.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=healthinfo&action=display&thread=229I may not love RC, but I love their ferrets. Dookdook, I am SO happy that you have Dexter back in your arms! (those are happy tears lol). I have been anxiously following your threads from your first one wanting to convince your mom to now. I am a bit of a fan. haha I think you are such a loving person, and that no one deserves Dexter more than you. I am terribly sorry that, broken jaw or deformity, you and poor Dex have to deal with this issue, and that you guys had to go through this ordeal. *hugs* I am glad that you took him back and I know you will never regret it. He is going to love you with all of his might and when you look into those little ruby eyes every day from here on out, you will know that all of this big ordeal was Nothing, just a bump in the road to bring you guys closer. In regards to his diet, I bet that he would do very well on a diet of commercially ground raw, it has meat, organs and bone and you can get a pretty wide variety of foods but is all nice and soft and easy for him to eat. I would suggest that you look around for a fancy-schmancy pet store in the area (aka not PetCo/PetsMart) that sells raw food. Call around to different places and see if anyone carries commercial raw for cats/dogs. It often has some fiber in it as well which I actually find to be very helpful with my two. You can also give purreed and ground raw from store-bought meats. There are a few options, and a raw diet is still possible by all means. PS....since you have a "new" ferret again, we certainly need some new pictures...

I wonder if there's another agency you could call, like the BBB or whichever county department might regulate their pet care, and complain. I'm sooo glad you got him back but to carry and never treat an injured/deformed animal, and then sell and re-sell him at full price is just ludicrous. Kudos to you for loving him so much, I hope something can be done to ease his difficulties.

I'd want a vet report and xrays from a knowledgeable ferret vet who is not associated with the pet store.
