Hey guys. Bruce has been eating chicken soup to start his switch and for the last 2 days chunks of chicken, in which he is eating everything. He is pooping less it seems, and when he does they are runny black poos. Is this clear indication he is sensitive to chicken or maybe it is just the switch on his body? Was thinking of signing up to the mentoring program so I don't have to flood the forum with questions like this that will more than likely come up, but while I'm not, though i'd ask this.

What else is in the soup? Dark stools usually happen when organ meats are fed. Is there any liver/heart in the mix?

None what so ever. Just chicken, water and he has had an egg once and a touch of olive oil. I am making a trip to the shops today and was going to get him hearts for sure and whatever else I could get my hands on. Come to think of it, I might put my name down for a mentor it'll be easier and safer. But just wanted to ask this question as it confused me.

Generally if there is a sensitivity, they'll have either yellowish seedy stools, or greenish. Both indicate the food passing through their system too quickly. Dark, looser stools could be from the soup with no bone or eggshell. Nothing to firm it up at all. Try adding about 1/2 tsp powdered eggshell to 8 oz of meat, see if that helps. Or about 2 tsp pure pumpkin mixed into it. Pumpkin won't provide the calcium, but should help firm up the stools. If either of those two work, he likely doesn't have a sensitivity.

Dark stools usually signify undigested blood. It could be he's sensitive, but I'm thinking that there is a lack of bone, so I suggest that you add 1/2 tsp of powdered egg shell to 8 oz of meat mix and some pumpkin 1/2 tsp to a tsp and see what happens. How is his activity level? I've had this occur on occasion with newly switched ferrets. It usually clears up within a couple of days but I feed ground bone with my mix so I'm going to suggest adding some egg shell powder and see what happens. ciao

I'd completely forgotten your guy was on meds! That in itself could well account for the black stools

Perhaps but he finished his antibiotics a couple days ago and only recieves an injection for his mites and footrot. Which could explain it however it's only happen since swapping him to chicken soups and chunks. He only seems to be pooping 1 or 2 times a day which is worrying too. However i've put 1/2tsp of egg shell in this morning and will keep watch.

Yeah I sure will. Today for his AM food he had I'd say atleast 2oz of chopped chicken, planning the same tonight. Will keep an eye on it and keep you updated.

It might be how the meds(injection) is interacting with the meat somehow. It's also possible he's developed an ulcer from them, and the introduction of the chicken is simply coincidental. Have you noticed if he's grinding his teeth, rubbing his face on the floor a lot, anything like that?

Actually now you say that, I noticed one day this week, but only one day, he was rubbing the sides of his head on some cloth. Haven't seen him do it the past few days however. I was going to do that homemade treatment that is on the forum just incase he had ear mites as well. But haven't noticed it since so will keep an eye on it. I'm assuming those type of signs you mentioned could indicate an ulcer? How is something like that diagnosed/treated? Thanks
