You know, that scratching problem never was resolved, but I came to the conclusion that it might be a nervous tic. Like a hair twirl or hand flap. He gets itchy when he’s most active and playing. He might be reacting to the sense of piloerection? So he scratches to relieve the sensation. He isn’t breaking the skin and it hasn’t gotten worse, or better, aside from when I first tried the Benadryl and then the effect wore off. I think it will remain a mystery forever at this point.

He went into the vet about four weeks ago for his distemper vaccine, and two weeks after that for his rabies vaccine, and the vet became obsessed with solving the itching problem when he learned it was still ongoing. I don’t think it effects him that negatively, but I went along with trying to find a solution because it was easy enough. The vet gave Churchill a trial of prednisolone, thinking if it was able to stop the reaction, it would point to a missing allergy that could be worked on. He also took another stool sample to make sure last year’s parasites were gone (they are). So he was prescribed 0.15 mL pred twice daily for a week with instructions to call in and discuss any response (nothing happened), then once daily for three days, and finally every other day for six days. He had his last dose this morning. Vet is puzzled that nothing happened and is researching further medications to try. I’m still convinced it’s a tic that emerges with excitability.
In other news, he stopped eating raw chicken liver just after I bought a five pound tub of it! I guess us humans will have to make chopped liver out of it. He has also stopped eating chicken wings and rabbit bones, so I’m stuck with some leftovers of that, too. He gladly eats freeze dried beef liver, and he’s getting his bones from freeze dried sardines (they’re very high in calcium) and whole mice. Other foods currently in the rotation are chicken hearts, whole day-old chicks, pork chops, and beef brain. They didn’t have beef brain again when I went to buy another from the butcher so I bought pork brain, hope he likes it, still polishing off the last of the beef. I feed it sparingly as the fat in it seems to go right through him.
I had to stop breeding my own mice this past year, my allergies to the little guys got too bad and I was having asthma attacks every time I cleaned their enclosure, so now I’m buying them frozen. Argh, such a dent in the pocket frozen mice make!
Everything else is pretty much the same.

Handsome devil. FHL is not a very humorous place, but they have shared a lot of good knowledge. Sukie is a mad ferret researcher.

Hey unclejoe , was it Scamp who chewed holes in water gallon handles? I think he really does have a descendent in spirit here, because I discovered Churchill chewing holes in my water bottles today. Luckily I caught it as it was happening, the floor of the pantry is an ever-changing jungle gym of drink cases and it’s not unusual for him to play in there, but I heard furious crinkling noises that were going on too long and came over to see him chewing holes. Was able to save the 80% plus ferret spit left in the bottle by watering plants and topping off his own bowl, so just needed a towel. Thought maybe he was thirsty and something was wrong with his bowl, but he didn’t want any when offered or when his bowl was cleaned and put back with more. Don’t know why he did it because he’s been peacefully coexisting with water bottles on the floor for over a year now.

No, that was Lola. She punctured a few bottles before she was caught in the act. It was a mystery for a while. Ours are free roam during the day and she always struck while we were gone. Scamp was into EVERYTHING else, from kitchen drawers, dressers, closets and even the neighborhood. His obsession with rubber did him in.

Ah, I misremembered. I let mine loose whenever I’m home, but both overnight and when we leave the house it’s back in the cage. Only exception is if he’s asleep in the computer and peromyscus tank room, as he often is, and we’re only leaving for a little while. Then we’ll just shut the door and let him nap in there.
