At what age do intact female go into season? There's someone on craiglist giving away an intact, almost year old ferret to anyone who can afford to spay her.

Depends on when they were born, from what I understand. First spring, anyway.

So wouldn't she already be in heat if she was in fact intact? The ad claims she was from a breeder and there is a byb around there, my vet said they had recently fixed a couple. There's a fixed female as well, the ad is from a few days ago but I thought about emailing them to bring her into my vet if she does go into heat and they can't find anyone else to take her, I work all this week and can't get out of town. I can talk to the vet and work it out for my end possibly. A des implant would work then? Or a maybe? I'm not sure how much a ferret spay is there but I assume at least $400. I'm going to email the ad back tomorrow and see anyways.

I wouldn't think the des. Implant would work if she's already in heat.

I don't think she's in heat yet, at least that's not what it sounded like but hopefully I can get more info. I don't know why people wait until the last flippin moment to try to rehome an animal they can't care for, especially in a case like this. I'm just wondering if maybe she is in fact intact, because it seems like she should be in heat by now? Guess I'll see if they respond to an email.

I hope you get a response soon - I'd hate for her to go into heat why people get pets they can't pay for is beyond me

Well I heard back so far just that he still has them so I sent another email back asking for some more info. I did call my vet and it's $372 for an exam/spay, plus another $70 for an exam/blood glucose on the other girl, if she's not in heat yet I'd like to see if they will do a des. implant, I forgot to ask when I called, that would be $125 which not only is a better price but I could leave her intact. I wish there was more info on using it with intact females though...

I think there was a study about it going on? I know there's an article about males and chemical alter with des.

Alright so I got a response, they said they just found out the younger was from a breeder last month but they've had her since last Aug. and that they think she is in heat right now, how long are ferrets in heat for? The older one they don't think has ever seen a vet either. I just don't know how to tell if this is indeed a breeder ferret that's intact in heat, or an adrenal, it sounds like there has been some tossing around of these two so who really knows?

Well if she's in heat she needs to see a vet asap. Shell remain in heat for up to 160 days (read online). If not taken out of heat, shell become anemic. I think she needs a Jill jab ( ) and then either needs to be spayed or implanted with des. A vhob can also be used but that is not 100% successful. You determine a female is in heat by swollen vuvla. So same as adrenal unfortunately

So she needs a jill jab even if she'll be spayed? Is that just a hormone shot? I don't know if the vet would have that, I also highly doubt there's any v-hobs around. I'll ask when she went into heat, you'd just count the whole time she's been all jiggly down there? That really puts me in a tight spot, I want to help her but I can't get out of town this week, nor do I really have $500.

I believe she needs to be taken out of heat first (so Jill jab) and then either spayed or des. I'm not 100% on this just going by info on the net and stuff.
I wonder if the des implant would take her out of heat??

Thanks Jackie, that was really good info, so could possibly jill jab if they have it, then a des implant once she is out of heat? And that it's not an immediate like this week worry. I'm thinking I might see if I can pay the vet and have the owner bring her in. Since I don't know how long it takes to bring a ferret out of heat, and then she'd have to go back to get an implant.
