Hello from Downunder!

Hi all! I am from Western Australia, Perth!
Just wanted to say hi as i am a new member to the forum!
I've just got a 6 month old boy that i've named Pablo II... Pablo I being my pet rat that is no longer with me...
I got Pablo just 3 days ago on a winter night as the previous owner was desperate to find him a home due to his young children... I've been searching for a pet ferret for 2 years now with no luck... So, i'm glad i've found Pablo.
I'm still new to this as i think i can probably read a whole bunch of information but to actually own a ferret is a whole new ball game altogether - kinda on the job training with this bundle of joy.
He has just done his first ever war dance this arvo so i think he is beginning to get used to his surroundings and to me... Not that he was hostile when i took him home... he is extremely tame...
He has brought much laughter back into my life... i know it's only 3 days but i find that i am laughing more with his silly antics.
Anyway, i'm having him checked by a friend who is a vet on saturday... bless her...
Pablo has a limp - the guy told me his leg got squashed when he was born... but it doesn't bother me one bit as i don't see him as defective or anything... he can still climb, jump and run very well...
Pablo has made his first poo in the litter box today! I've been trying to get him to do it in the litter box but he does it just outside it... i think the he might be finding it difficult to climb into it... so i might get him a different box... not sure... see how we go... or just lay newspapers on the corner he does his poopoo... the weeing is ok as he seems to like to do it near the drainage of the toilet... so it's all good...
He was cheeky though, he peed on my book that was on the carpet! and he was looking at me the whole time he did it... lol...
Anyway, that's my spill of me and Pablo...Pablo more so...hehehe...
This looks like a great site to learn...

Hi, and welcome! And congrats on your first ferret- it is DEFINITELY a steep learning curve ;D As to him having a problem with the box, is it the kind with a low cut front? If not, you can just cut out an opening about 6" wide, down to about 2" left in the front. Just sand the edges to make sure they aren't sharp.
As for peeing on your book- sounds like a "protest" pee to me ;D They will also have "protest poops" when they are upset with you over things. Lucrezia's(one of our DEW's) favourite spots are my chair, or in my bed
Anyway- please feel free to browse, post, ask questions, and join in on the fun! These are such amazing little creatures, and you never really stop learning!
And that all said- where are the pictures?? Those are mandatory ;D

Everyone's friendly and more than willing to give a helping hand. Please, please remember there is no such thing as a stupid questions. These little guys though a pleasure are not an easy keep and have issues that baffle the best. Brainstorming is often the best way to come up with a solution. Hi guys! Thanks for the warm welcome! I really appreciate it!
Indeed i think the peeing on my book and pooping on the carpet are pablo protesting because he usually does it in the toilet! My mister is a cheeky bugger! kekeke....
I've attached a picture of him taken with my iphone... He becomes real flaccid when he is on my lap... so he flops everywhere!

thanks Sherry for the idea of cutting the litter box.
I think that is why he doesn't want to use the box as it is difficult to climb in when you've gotta go, you've gotta go!

I recently cut down the sides of the litter box and now we've been accident free in cage for over a week! So it really can make all the difference.

Also, having a litter box big enough is key. Ferrets like to be able to fit their whole body in the box.

the box is huge! but the sides are too high for pablo to bother climbing in when nature calls... kekeke
what did you use to cut the box? i think i need to get a cutter... but if that is expensive, i'll just get him another box... cos the box only costs AUD 9.95....

Just use a heavy duty utility knife- but be CAREFUL!!!

I used a jagged knife and then sanded the edges down. The box I have is kinda thin so it worked fine. A hand held tool like a dremel can work well, especially for thicker plastic.
