So I'm a bit scared right now as I am out of town with family and my brother is taking care of my baby Teddy. He called last night to tell me that Teddy has been throwing up the past 2 days. He said it has happened about 4 or 5 times that he's seen. I asked him if he'd send me a picture of Teddy's poop since he had already cleaned up the vomit. The amount of poop pictured is less than Teddy's normal. It looks about the normal color but it is much smaller and in like thin ribbons. I got him to take Teddy to the emergency vet last night. The vet did an exam then did x-rays to look for a blockage. He said that Teddy's tummy was full of food and his intestines were full of poop. He said he did not see a blockage but it also was hard to tell since Teddy was so full. But the vet said it was good that Teddy had food in his tummy because it means he is eating. He said that he thought Teddy looked healthy besides the vomiting so he thought maybe an upset tummy or a bug? He gave Teddy some anti-vomiting meds and some fluid through the skin and sent him home. He said if he vomits again then it could be a bad problem and we'd need to come back for a look with barium. I am still very nervous as everywhere I look online for advice shouts death sentence from vomiting. It is just very scary for me as I am a relatively new ferrent and this is my little one's first time with any sickness and I won't be home with Teddy till Monday. Have any of you ferrents experienced anything similar? Could it be a hairball? Is there anything I could do? This is just a very anxious time as Teddy has never been sick before and I am not by my baby's side when he is sick so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of food do you feed? Do you use anything to help prevent hairballs weekly? How long ago was his last poop? I think the proper step would be to do the blockage protocol to see if he can push past what's blocking him up but am unsure as I am still a new ferrent myself so let's wait for an admin to pop in first. I will tag more knowledgeable people though! I'm really surprised they didn't do a barium since they can tell he is stuffed up. Sherry @poncesmom

You need to find out: How much has he eaten in the last couple of days and post some stool pics. Has he vomited since and has he eaten since being to the vet. I'm more concerned with the full belly than I am if it's empty. A blockage is very much a possibility as most soft item blockages will not show up in an xray. Two days of vomiting and pencil thin stools all have the ear marks of a partial blockage. A hairball is a blockage and it won't show up on a normal xray. We need some up to date information...has he eaten and how much and what is his present status ciao

Sherry @poncesmom I feed him the Kaytee Fortified Diet Chicken Ferret Food. I don't use anything to help prevent hairballs weekly. I knew that it was possible for ferrets to get hairballs but I did not previously know there was something to give them on weekly basis for it! Plus this is my first shedding season with Teddy, I adopted him from the shelter in July 2015. I can't pinpoint his last poop as I am not there in person to watch him but my brother said he has had to clean up his poop around the house every day when Teddy is out to play and there was some fresh stuff in his litter box. So I assume his last poop was yesterday/last night. If the right step is the blockage protocol could I have the info for that! I've seen different recommendations of pumpkin, vaseline, olive oil, etc. I don't know what would be best? Thanks!

Typically you can give 1-2 raw egg yolks (just the yolks) once a week for healthy hairball digestion during shedding season. This is also my first shedding season with my two so I am still learning as well. Once the little guy is feeling better we can go over all that information.

He said Teddy has been eating his food everyday and drinking from the water bowl as normal. I will attach a picture of his litter box, it's not fresh poop in there but I told my brother to send a picture of his fresh poop while he is out playing this morning. (as he usually likes to poop outside the litter box). My brother did say his fresh poops are still light brown and mushy but not watery. He said he picked up one last night while he was playing so that is his most current poop I am aware of. He has not vomited since the vet last night and he has not eaten yet because the vet said to wait till this morning/afternoon but it is time for him to come out to play, should I withhold food or water? His current status seems pretty normal he is still playing and running and seems generally happy.

I would provide water to make sure he is hydrated, I would think it is fine to provide food but am unsure. So he pooped before the vet, but not after? This is the Bloackage Protocol. docs.google.com/document/d/145QYWoTOJlsHViwRrtqDk8wPrFtx9sBxtKU0-sCYtwU/editBut I'm still really new so it might be good to see if someone else has more knowledge.

Okay, I told my brother to put the water out for him. And as far as I know, yes. He might have pooped after but my brother didn't think he saw a fresh poop in the cage. He did go to the ER vet at 1 am last night though and got home around 2 am, it is now noon. I'm not sure if they gave him some medicine to make him relax for the x-rays and he might have come home and slept till this morning. My brother had to wake him up to get him out. It is just a little harder to know every detail as I am not there monitoring him. My brother has been educated on how to feed, water, and play with teddy. He knows all the ferret basics and danger signs to look for for emergencies but he isn't the ferrent and doesn't pay attention to all the details like the exact color and size of his poop for instance lol. He lives in the same household as Teddy but I guess it's the same as any parents who leaves their child with a babysitter. The parent always knows their kid best and is best at knowing all the little details when they are there.

That is too true, even my BF who we live with and plays with them every night doesn't know as much as I do and just simply doesn't pay as close of attention. (well and he hates looking at poop) Glad to hear he is easy to reach and sounds like he is doing a good job so far! I'm crossing my fingers Teddy gives you a nice good big poop! Did the vet say when to return if he doesn't poop?

The vet did not say when to return if he doesn't poop, he just said to return right away if Teddy vomits again so they could do a barium. So fingers crossed like you said that he gives me a nice poop and he doesn't throw up again. Thank you so much for all the help!

Yeah my BF is the same way, he can hardly pick poop up when they are playing. I wish I could be of more help, I can't really recommend much since I don't want to give you the wrong information. If his mood changes and he is lethargic, not drinking I would return to the vet though. They can go downhill fast with a blockage. I'll be around for most of the day so keep us updated, I hope someone comes through with better advice!

I hope your wee man is doing better. After you get home is there anyway you can change his kibble? That kaytee stuff is really not good at all and has a lot of stuff in it that they shouldn't have. If you have to feed kibble check out this page it will help you pick a better food for him. moredooks.herobo.com/search.php?chart=ferret

So far no more throwing up and he left my brother a poop last night when he was playing I'm not saying we're completely out of the woods, I will be watching him closely as soon as I'm home but I'm feeling a little more at ease now
