If you have the ability to financially, I'd go as large as you can. It's always harder to add on later. You plan sounds great, and those costs aren't bad. I might have to start my own home project

Yay!! My room mates son went out with me to the spot and helped me put up stakes. We started out with 6 x 12 but it didn't really look good. The stream would be taking up a lot of the space. So we pulled the stakes up and decided to use the full length of the wood out back. Final Measurement-> 10 x 10. We even have a blue-print done that helps us figure out exackly how much 2 x 4's to get.

I'd say the holes are way too big...my adult female managed to squeeze through a crescent shaped gap between our drywall and bathroom sink pipe that was maybe 1.5" tall by 1/2" wide at the widest point. The general rule of thumb is if their head can fit, so will the rest of their body. It's like they turn liquid somehow ;D. I don't have an outdoor enclosure, but I'm sure someone else will have better recommendations for the mesh.

Ooh, I can't wait to see this. I love seeing other's homemade projects, whether it's sewn or hammered. It's really exciting to begin planning and then see something great come out of it, even more so when your ferrets can get something out of it. I want to make some kind of tube slide for mine in the future... Also, I love the photo of the black-footed ferret! How neat is that!

I'd plan on not getting anything an inch in diameter. Some small females can fit through even smaller than that, though. I had one squeeze herself through the bottom gap between a solid baby gate and the wall!

Two inches is wayyyyy to large. Your little girls will be outside the pen laughing at your boys on the inside. I was trying to get a video of my little Natasha sliding under my pantry door I will catch her yet. ciao

Check to see if there is a Habitat for Humanity thrift store in your area... it's a great place to get construction supplies really cheap!

yeah! On top of the clothes and other "stuffs" there is usually an outdoor area that has windows doors tile countertops bathtubs sinks and stuff like that. The one near me has a whole section with electrical fixtures and supplies, plumbing fixtures and supplies, tools, applicances...just about everything! Thats where I got a bunch of flexable drainage tubing taht the fuzz LOVE to run through! When a home is bought by habitat to be rehabed everthing in that home that can be reused is brought to the thrift store and sold, cabinets, fixtures, tubs, sinks, windows.... everything! ALso check Craigslist for free wood pallets, they can be broken down and the wood reused, also if there is a granite or marble countertop company near by they usually will have the large frames or pallets that the slabs of marble and granite come on out by the dumpster for the taking.....
can you tell I'm just a tad cheap?!?!?!?!

New update. The plans are set. Blueprint drawn up. And we are setting up the time to build this thing. I was going to wait for my big check to come. But apparently I get tax cash this year and it comes in 8-10 days. The good doesn't stop there. My room-mates son was talking about henges and stuff. He called up his dad and asked him if he could buy the stuff and I pay him back when the money gets here. The cage may be up by the end of the week. ^.^
