thats the good news bad news is something IS up with Neka. I haven't figured it out though.
He's been steadily improving his his blockage surgery(6 weeks), this is the first real glitch.
Tues threw up salmon. been eating ok since, less then norm but still eating.
His energy is the biggest change. sleepier, energy is normal is small spurts. When he sleeps without being forced (aka being put in cage) it's never a good sign. lol He's cuddly... again a sign something is up.
Gums feel damp, scruff test ok does not seem dehydrated.
Only thing new is ulcer meds. started up again on tues. could this be a reaction to that? He's on sulcrate.
Poops dark (thus the ulcer meds), usually formed well.
Any thoughts??

i always think that they change forever after those big surgeries. almost like they turn into old ferrets overnight. they are never quite the same. but sleeping more than usual is odd. do you have a follow up with the vets scheduled?

I don't think vomiting after salmon is a symptom of whatever is going on with Neka. In addition to being super rich, I think they tend to eat salmon way too fast.

jacksmomma, i agree and wasn't too worried with just that.
miami, no follow up scheduled, though i have talked to the vet on the phone 3 times, everything was going well. until this point (except for the first week after surgery) his energy had been normal (normal for him which was always higher then the others).
I've given pumpkin&olive oil just in case which he ate about a tsp with no issues.

Fish is a fav which has a tendency to bounce if eaten too fast. I give mine in little bits, like treats. How long did you keep him on the ulcer meds after the surgery. His symptoms do remind me of my ulcer kids ciao

he was on the meds for 3weeks, till the bottle ran out lol when he came off he was not completely eating his normal diet, so vet didn't seem worried about poops. then got more this week when i went in to refill zeke's, i mentioned that neither was having normal coloured poops and she suggested he go back on it. He's been back on since tues. Was fine before then (other then poop colour?) thats why i'm wondering if the meds are effecting him.

Hmmm, know where that is Yuri is on his second bottle. He went downhill when Minion went in for surgery. Poor boy. When his last cagemate went to the vets he never came back except to get his travelling snuggles. It broke Yuri's heart to loose Napoleon. Yuri didn't want to get attached to the brat but he is and now they're having to live apart for a bit until Minion heals up. I did find and I'm finding it again that the clavamox seemed to cause some digestive issues with the second bottle....almost like the gut bacteria is just not digesting the food properly (which it's not, we just slottered it all ) Even though they need this stuff to cure the ulcer it is and does cause alternative issues. I could suggest some yogurt but it didn't work very well with Yuri so I'm a little reticent to suggest it. If you try it give very very little as it will upset their stomachs more. I'm seriously thinking of trying some slippery elm soup to see if that helps it at all. If it doesn't rain in pours ciao

I was planning on trying the slippery elm with sadie's ibd, so maybe ill try harder to find some now for neka. What do you mean by slippery elm soup? Just adding it to soup or something else? Yes everything does seem to happen at once.

Slippery elm soup or gruel (I think it looks like soup) Mix one tsp of the powder with 1 cup of water or broth (find the broth is easier to get them to take) in a pan. Heat slowly to a boil, stirring often (use a whisk it works best). Reduce heat and let simmer 2 - 3 min. stirring constantly. Take off heat. Let cool and add to food. You can syringe it as well. Dosage: 1/2 tsp or 2 cc's by syringe 3 or 4 times daily. Unused portions can be refrigerated for up to 3 days. If you're syringing, take some broth or some really liquidy type soupy to introduce more fluids as this can become an issue if care isn't taken to keep hydration. ciao

The vet has recommended AD care for neka. we are syringing 2 cc's every two hours. He's not eating on his own, is drinking on his own... though feels like too much for me. SHe think's it's related to his surgery(blockage), and wants to go back a few steps with what he eats. She explained it as the area is healing it will shrink and have less flexiblity. It seems to be causing some cramps/pain as he jumps from a dead sleep. energy slightly better today, but i've also separated the boys due to food issues, and i think that has neka out of sorts. My biggest concern right now (or fear) is it's his kidneys. She did say this was a possibility. the area where he was shaved (belly, front legs and neck) all seem to be tinged yellow/brown. was nice and pink or white where hair coming in. Still waiting for a call back from the vet.

thx ladies. The vet is thinking Liver, jaundice which makes sense. Liver is also a bit better then kidney as the liver can repair it's self. She's not sure if there is more going on then just from the surgery. He's seemed to puzzle her from the very beginning, he gets weird metabolic symptoms that don't fit whats going on. She says to continue the same course with the food and syringe water every few hours. He did actually eat a bit of the canned food off my hand tonight, so thats good. His stools are.... so smelly... and green with mucus and blood.
