In your journaling, have you written down what kind of poops he's had after what meals?

Gina do you think a course of prediezone would help settle him down.....seems when his protein is changed it causes issues with poops.....was only chicken and now this.

I can see that bump on Gomez this time. It looks like it's gotten bigger. List his proteins and poops here for me so we can see if there's a pattern. He has been doing fine with different protein until this past week. Has something changed? Did you give him something new again? With such a foul smell though, I'm thinking that he might have a bacterial overload. Maybe take him with you to the vet tomorrow and have him checked out. Or just take a poop sample. If it's bacteria, they should give him a round of antibiotics. You can also try giving him some kefir to help balance his gut bacteria.

Maybe ask the vet about the Triple Therapy - metronidazole, amoxicillin, carafate. This is a common treatment for IBD. The metro and amoxicillin are antibiotics to treat secondary infections caused by food moving erratically through the the system. The carafate is a tummy coater to help soothe any upset. She might also suggest a short term round of pred. These can all help treat the poop but I really want to find the cause of the problem, if it's dietary or stress related or something else.

We have provided a stool sample that our vet is going to have cultured... so we shall see. Takes about 2 weeks they said. Just she is concerned about salmonella and e coli because of the raw. She was an advocate of feeding mice as a whole meal. She seems ok but skeptical of the Franken prey diet. Gomez has a clear fluid filled cyst. So that's great news!!!

Well, how do you feel about whole prey? Is that something you would want to try? Did you ask her what concerns her about frankenprey? Is she concerned with balance, or safety, or something else?
Hurray for just a cyst! That is great news!

Balance .... I feel is her main concern. I'm not sure we have the resources to do raw whole prey. And by resources, I mean the variety of meats for them

As soon as we get their menu finalized, you can take a copy of it to her along with some research on ferrets' nutritional needs and see if she is more comfortable with it knowing that you know what you're doing.
I think that most people who feed whole prey order it online. There are several online suppliers. If that's something you're interested in, even for a few meals a week, we can look into it. It's not difficult to balance frankenprey around a few whole prey meals and it would give them more proteins. And I don't recall hearing of any IBD ferrets having trouble with whole prey. But don't feel bad if you don't want to/can't go that route. I personally can't feed whole prey although I would like to. I've had too many small animal pets and I can't bear to feed anything with a face.

Morning from NH....that might work, what's odd is she has been fine and supports raw and gets they are obligate catnivores....she thought like we've said before is feeding mice totally, raising feeders and all. "They wouldn't eat a cow in the wild" I tell her no but if they came upon it they would. Hopefully, the menu and I've wanted to bring her some reading. She made a comment about this group you are a part of, so they just have ferrets. Grrrrrrrr lol, said no its breeders, Ferants for a very long time like 20-25 yrs, vet people etc. She was better. Really surprised me ad I thought she was ok since initially she was.....all cause she thinks Jax has salmonella or ecoli...from raw. We have our menu and will post later today. Have been giving Jax Kifer since Thurs night and poops are better. BOY, he is a stashed for sure lol Also, we found the chicken crumble at the feed store so Jami is going to redo their boxes. Bump on Gomez is way way smaller since she aspirated the fluid, what do you think caused it? Have a great day

I can do mice but not other things with a face. We'd like to also but no way

Haha...I totally get the whole prey problem!
Jax's tests will most likely come back with some ecoli and/or salmonella, simply because it's always present in the gut. I'm not sure what the levels SHOULD be but I'll try to get that information to you before the results come in so you won't be surprised.
We have quite a few vets here and on the FB page. Tell your vet to join the forum and check us out. She doesn't necessarily have to post often but she might find that this is a good resource.
I'm glad Gomez's bump is looking better. No way to know what caused it, but it could have been a little bite from Jax that formed an abscess.

Totally forgot to tell you something, we made organ soupie to make like gravy as we continued to have issues with heart. Liver and kidney they like. So, put in heart, liver and ground it up with some water. Gave them an ounce each with chunks a d they gobbled it up.

She did send over some rx for diarrhea, don't have it yet but will send you the name.
