Gina, I would like to discuss the issue of how badly the boys poop smells ![???](http://www.holisticferretforum.com/images/Ferret_Smilies/confused.GIF) ? It's awful. We have reas tha5 raw fed ferrets poop doesnt smell as bad.... ![???](http://www.holisticferretforum.com/images/Ferret_Smilies/confused.GIF) ?are we doing somwthing wrong!?!?!? And I scoop litter AM and PM. We use wood pellets and I clean the entire litter pan 1x/week. Their bedding gets changed every few days. I noticed today that there are still bits of what look like undigested food in the poo on the litter box. We do not put chicken on Jax's plate but Gomez does get chicken sometimes and there is no way to prevent Jax from sampling from Gomez's plate. We don't want to feed or house them separately.... Please offer any advice Thanks JAMI

Are you sure it's the poop or is it the pee? My guys' poop really doesn't have much smell but their pee would run you out of the house, especially when I was using wood pellets! The wood turns to sawdust when it's wet and it's hard to get all the wet out and it STINKS when it's wet. You can use a little baking soda in the box and it will help some. Last year I switched to chick crumble and it is SOOOO much better. And I just recently bought Sweet PDZ to add to the box and it has really cut the odor down to almost non-existent. You might try looking for the chick food and see if it makes a difference. It's also cheaper than the wood pellets (well, here anyway). As far as the bits of undigested food, I wouldn't worry about it too much if it's only occasional and not a whole lot. It could also be that the boys are putting pieces in the box. In the wild, ferrets will put their food where they poop to keep it safe. Gross, I know, ![](http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h352/JW_2012/Emoticons/XP.png) but there have been several ferrets here on the forum that have done the same thing.

Can you provide photo of this chick crumble of which you speak? So that we can look into that. But it's the food as it smells like rotten/spoiled chicken. The PDZ we know of and will get some to try as well. ![](http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160126/348fd55884ccef68ec0fb2e949a5fa5c.jpg) It's not them hiding food either. I have been watching keenly these last couple days. JLD

Aldo this appears to only be Jax that has the issue of undigested food in his poop

So it's the food that's stinking, not the litter box? In that case, cut back on the amount of food so there's not so much left over sitting in the cage all day. That poop looks like undigested fat. Try removing more of the skin/fat from the chicken and see if that helps. I don't have/can't find a picture of the bag of chick crumb that I use. The middle picture here is the texture I get and it works great. The clumps are not completely solid when I scoop but if I just don't shake the scooper much, it all stays together pretty well. ![](http://s15.postimg.org/ur4sue97r/chicken_feed.jpg) I don't even know for sure what brand I use. I just ask for the cheapest UNMEDICATED chicken crumble they have. I pay less than $10 for a 50 lb bag that lasts 3-4 months. Any farm supply store should have it. I know that TSC carries some, but theirs is more expensive and often they only have pellets, not crumbles.

I just looked at that picture again. That whole poop looks pretty bad. Is that from Jax? Does he still have those often?

It's the poop that smells so awful....sorry I just re-read my post which was a little bit confusing. It happened when Jax was having issues with his poop earlier. Their litter box smells of raw rotten food.... it's awful!!!! This has only just started up again in the last week or so. And only for Jax. I feel that he has IBD. It had cleared up and was ok for awhile. Now we are back to this.... ![???](http://www.holisticferretforum.com/images/Ferret_Smilies/confused.GIF) ?

Have Jax's poops also gotten worse again in the last week, or is it just the smell that has gotten worse?

Both have gotten bad again Gina. I'm soooo confused and unsure of what to do for him! His little tummy must be upset. And we do trim off excess fat from his food as it tends to be passing through his digestive system.
