Question....how do you smash bones without splattering all over the kitchen.....I told Jami I might have to do it outside lol I used a meat mallet at first and put a piece of wax paper over the top. Then pulled the wax paper off and used the cleaver to make it smaller. I also used a kitchen towel (one of theirs) and made a bib. I splattered all over at first but have learned through repetition what makes it less messy. I don't have to smash it all so much now. I don't remember if I mentioned this or not to you but I have a cutting board and cleaver that is just for them. After prepping, those go into the dishwasher and I wipe down the counters and that sponge goes into the dishwasher also. Then I wash my hands very well.

The top knobby part (drumette) is a bit tough for them but you can smash it and it will release the good stuff inside. Gomez will not probably be able to eat anything other than the tip part for now. A wing is in 3 sections, the drumette/the wingette and the tip. The wingette and the tip will be easiest for him for now but include the drumette section just cut that part off and smash it up some. Having a deaf ferret is a bit of a challenge. I can't call her when I want her to come. We're free roam so I have to look for her. Gfountain uses a stomp call by stomping in the same pattern. I'm working on using a flashlight to get her attention. Keller is darling and has this tiny sweet face and little munchkin voice unless she is mad or annoyed then she can sound like a military alert klaxon. She's a funny little character. Congrats on being a junior member. That's based on the number of posts you make. When I first joined, I thought it referred to our age group. The color of the stars also indicate whether we have a "job" here. So what do the colors mean, I see red and yellow? You and Sherry have lots of stars  I will get some chicken tips out this week and try him. So for meats, especially poultry do we always freeze to kill parasites? I know weeks ago you told me to freeze fish to kill parasites for 3 weeks before we ever feed. Wave to you and your little ones

I tried the mallet and clever with wax paper too when we were getting meat prepped before we had Gomez. I wipe the counter down with clorox wipes, then have cutting board.....do all the work then yes like you rinse and put in the dishwasher. Jami then cleans the sink. Then wipe down the counter again with the wipes. Most of the time it have a paper towel to wipe my hands on then wash up and we have a nail brush by the sink.

The stars are yellow for members or HFF students. A Green star is for Moderators/Mentors/Mentors in Training. A blue star means a Forum Tech A red star is an Administrator A purple star is for the test moderator (an IT thing) A pink star is for our HFF greeter Julesalot.
You don't have to freeze store bought meat. If you hunt or fish, then you will want to freeze to kill any parasites or yucky fish worms. Avoid letting Gomez eat any mice he finds. Sometimes neighbors put out poison and a mouse may come inside to die.
What a beautiful little sable. Is that a boy or a girl? I hope that he/she finds a wonderful forever home. You can always talk to a manager and sometimes they will negotiate a price with you.
If you keep thinking about this one then you've made a connection and that's hard to pass up.
I haven't heard that about Marshall's. I'll ask the next time I have an excuse to go into any pet stores that carry ferrets. Was that a Petco? Wynstan came from a Petco and so did Keller but she came to us through our family doctor who needed to rehome her.
Paul has pretty much forbidden me to step foot into any more stores that carry ferrets. I keep saying that five is enough but then I always want to bring one home.
You could also look on Petfinder. Under breed put in ferret. It's finicky but let's you put in how many miles away. What's nice about it is that rescues list their ferrets there and you will know what rescues are close to you. I don't care where they come from, breeder/petstore/rescue/craigslist...I just want each and every one of them to find their loving forever home.

It is a local small town pet store. I do not like them but Jami had seen the ferret sign out front for weeks and wanted to go look.....she is like you on that lol. I am too but a little better. She was really light like a cinnamon almost. I asked what the sex was and they told me both were boys, I said the light one is a female....nope says on the paperwork they are neutered so boys.....I just shut up at that point.

Boy, not only uninformed but unwilling to learn. Mika came from our local small town petstore. I asked when they were getting their next ferret/s in and the owner told me. She spent one night there and I picked her up first thing in the morning. She was tiny and scared and in an aquarium with a small blanket and just a water bottle and hard kibble. We brought her home and she was so excited to see other ferrets and meeped away. Juliet became her fur mom and I was her skin mom. She was barely eight weeks old. There is a special bond with a brand new baby like that. She still loves to snuggle up to me and gives me special arm kisses.

Hi! Sorry I was away most of today. I had a very nasty weather induced headache. I skimmed over the replies and @poncesmom has been really helpful The little cinnamon ferret looks gorgeous! I hear that they're quite rare. I love your menu as well. Its very nicely written up. Documenting is a very useful thing as well. Since its in writing, you can easily take it with you to the vet if its ever needed. I wrote up in a journal for a while but gave up and typed and printed instead for my folder. Hehe. Bone in meats are actually quite easy to chop up using a cleaver. I never had any splattering when I did it. Though I did manage to fling some across the room once... It landed on the blind and was too high for me to reach :teehee: You can chop them into large pieces first and work your way until they're an acceptable size. A good way to break down the bone is to cut on an angle with the cleaver. I like to use the bottom end of my cleaver to smash through the bone before slicing.

I think I was thinking how hard it was to cut thigh bone and turkey wing but the wing tips and Cornish should be easier. So my question is. You actually crush the bones in the wing tips and Cornish hens ?? I am confused on that point -chop versus crush and which is the way I should do it? And is the way to start to Gomez on bone in? Cartilage ok for them?

I've cut up Turkey necks and those are quite tough. I think the larger the bird, the harder it would be to cut up. I've also cut up duck wings and compared to chicken wings those are little more tough. Cutting them into sections is a breeze though. As you practice cutting the wings, you'll find out the best way for you. You can crush the bones to start out with. I did it that way using a cleaver knife. You just keep chopping at it until its a good size or amount for Gomez to start with. I've never seen or cut up CGH, however it must be very similar to chicken. I found chicken was easier compared to duck wings. hehe. Cartilage is also very okay. Its very good for ferrets.
