Hello!
This is the unofficial transition thread for Peanut (F), Raisin (F), Porkchop (M) and Noodles (M). If you happen to be interested in this bunch, check my mentor application for a bit of background.
We have already started our transition, way back in July.
I began by simply adding water to their kibble (Orijen), gradually making it "soggy," then I started grinding it and making kibble "soup," then I was making homemade broth and mixing it with the water, than I started going broth-only, then I started blending cooked meat with the broth and ground kibble, THEN I started adding raw meat to that mix, thennnn I phased out the cooked elements, then I was blending ground meat with ground kibble, now I am at a total raw soup stage that my ferrets don't know if they agree with. I am still using some kibble during the day when I am not home, but I want to phase that out too.
Anyway.
Tonight I made a basic soup recipe for the next few days:
30.08 oz ground beef
3.76 oz chicken heart
3.76 oz beef liver
2 tsp bone meal powder
water
I tried to serve each ferret 2 oz of this soup at bedtime, which didn't go over too well even with gentle coaxing and even a few splashes of ferretone. Porkchop at a little bit when I put the oil on his. Peanut had some of hers, too (with ferretone). Noodles was not interested although I think he likes to eat after everyone is in bed. Raisin, of course, chowed down willingly and I won't be surprised if she samples some of the others', too.
Tomorrow morning I will give them kibble but I am getting ready to take the training wheels off. I'm hoping at that point they will start to eat without ferretone.
Stats:
Peanut
Approx. 2 years old
2 lb, 0.1 oz
Normal energy level
Raisin
Approx. 2 years old
2 lb, 2.5 oz
Normal energy level
Porkchop
Approx. 1 1/4 year old
3 lb, 2.8 oz
Normal energy level
Noodles
Approx 1 year old
3 lb, 3.9 oz
Normal energy level
Not sure how accurate their weights are as they wouldn't sit still, plus the bowl I put them in was not really comfortable/appropriate for ferrets. Will have to address that.
Zoom!
