So I leanred a very important lesson today... do not hand your ferrets chicken necks with your hands... and most importantly do not feed the one who likes raw less first (Sophie)... or else the raw-loving ferret (Olivia) will bit your finger so hard as she trys to steal it to take back with her to eat (apparently fingers and raw chicken necks look alike) that you will scream in pain and bleed everywhere ;D Anyways, I cleaned the cut out good, and I'll keep an eye out for infection but there's nothing I need to be really worried about getting, is there? She bit me before she ate the raw... but I'm sure they still have some of the raw bacteria in their mouths? Well I'm pretty sure e. coli and salmonella, etc. aren't blood born anyways... Also, they are too young to have rabies right? I'm assuming so, because they don't vaccinate for Rabies until they are older. Anyways I'm just being my regular paranoid self. But I figured it's better to check than get some terrible infection later.

You are fine no worries there. As long as you washed it out right away there shouldn't be an issue. Treat it like you would any cut or wound and it should heal quickly and normally.

Ouch....yes, remember ferrets have very bad eye sight. Your finger does indeed look like a chicken neck (even better one that's still wiggling ) Not to worry, I'd be dead and rolling in my grave if ferret bites were like cat bites and got infected every time you get bitten (and what the difference is between them I have no idea ). Clean it well, that's all ciao

Thanks guys!
That's what I was worried about Heather, cause cat bites can get so nasty so quickly! You're right, that doesn't make a lot of sense that ferret bites wouldn't, but I can't complain!

You would know if your baby had rabies They have to be bitten by a rabid animal to catch it, so no worries there. I was very surprised when I first bitten by a ferret and it drew blood. Dixie was the bitter, and it hurt like crap!

I figured they don't have Rabies or I'd know ;D and I know Jackie, it was surprisingly painful!!! Ouch Sherry! That sounds really painful, this one only tore through the skin and it hurt like crazy so I can't even imagine how much that would! I think ferrets must have much cleaner mouths that cats. That's why cat bites get so infected, and most cats have bad dental disease so that doesn't help! Maybe raw-diet ferrets are less likely to give you infected cuts than kibble-fed ones because their teeth and mouths stay so shiny clean from the bones?

My sweet Mayhem, got himself into a bit of a jam and was really, really scared and in pain. He managed to bite my hand 5 times before I even had a chance to pull back. Four of those bites were to the bone and one was in the meat of the thumb, near the base. How deep? they didn't hurt and I thought it was his blood all over the place. I knew I had been bitten once or twice but there were 5 distinct full bites in my hand. The only one that wasn't to the bone was the one between the thumb and finger...that's because the puncture went clean through Of that mess, only one got infected and that was because it was right on the knuckle and it kept opening up (it was also next to impossible to keep any type of plaster on it too ) As far as rabies...the so-called study is that ferrets usually progress so fast through the disease from time of infection to complete onset that you probably won't get bitten because they get sick so fast. It's also a dumb type rabies that they get (they can't open their mouths). ciao Oh, by the way...that numbness only lasted a few hours, my hand hurt like h*** later and was very swollen for a couple of days.

Hi I have lost count the number of times I have been bitten ( I judge other peoples ferrets all over the world so its my job to get bitten for daring to look at them lol ) and in all the years of being around ferrets I have never had a problem my advice is keep a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your first aid kit dilute 1 cap full with four caps of water and flush out the bite nothing survives that lol and it heals real quick believe me it works I have no immune system and I have never been ill from a ferret bite yet lol ( cut my hand on a tin of carrots once that took an age to heal lol ) take care bye for now Bev aka crazy lady

You guys are making me cringe imagining those painful bites! *Shudder*. My bite wound is almost closed and doesn't look infected at all. I doused it with hydrogen peroxide when it happened crazylady so I'm guessing that has helped! My immune system sucks also but so far so good, bites, handling raw food (I started out with gloves but then was like screw it), hand feeding them raw food, scooping litter. So far so good, I haven't caught anything for them. *knock on wood*

All my deep bites were from fear. And as difficult as it may be, once they bite, try your best NOT to pull away- that's what makes it a lot worse

Fear bites hurt and are the deepest. Fun-Go's bites were hard and nasty but again, he was being aggressive because he was scared. Minion nailed me a good one on the nail bed yesterday... and yes he was scared. I don't know what happened to this little fellow, he's just a baby but he's as scared as some of my hard core oldsters. I'm just now getting so I can handle him on the fly without being seriously bitten. Napoleon used to bite hard when he was a baby but it was all in fun. He was a happy fuzz. Minion is not. He's a scared fuzz but we are making headway and that's what counts. He will snuggle a bit during his treatments and he will allow me to pick him up without the exorcist thing going on. ciao

Ice and neosporin are my best friend in situations like these... LOL My advice would be to ice it even if you don't think its going to swell. The day after is usually when it hurts the most
