Hey- even dogs can have chicken bones with no problems at all. As long as all the bones are raw It's when they are dry cooked that there is trouble. That's when they become brittle, and cause all kinds of damage. And yes, mine all chewed and bit less when started on the wings. Gives them something to take their frustrations out on ;D |

One other thing- don't freak if one of them appears to not be breathing when you pick them up while asleep It's something called DFS(dead ferret sleep). They are just so deeply asleep that short of dynamite, they don't want to wake up. If Sophie is a panda, and she is deaf, she'll be more prone to doing this. Especially while still a kit. Yes, it is. The only reason I didn't freak out when we first experienced it is that I'd already read about it, and saw a video ;D Even at that, my heart lurched. It still does, except of course with Willow, who used to do it almost daily ;D
They are so totally limp, you actually think they are dead. The body is cool to touch, their respirations can be really shallow. You can even shake them, and they stay completely limp.

That has to be scary! I thought Jude was ill when he rolled off the shelf, to the next one, about a ten inch fall, and he stayed there sleeping. I watched and he was still breathing, just really tired.

Good point Sherry - I forgot that it`s COOKED chicken bones that dogs arent suppose to have. And that`s great that they stop biting everything else once they have the chicken. Thanks for the pointers about the sleeping, I did already know about that but it`s good to have a visual aid Do i just Reply to the `sign up for the mentoring program`thread with my responses to the questions... theyre werent any replies on it so i wasnt sure where to reply to. I forgot to answer someones question earlier about vaccines. Both girls have had only their 1st distemper vaccine and that was at 6 weeks (they also got spayed and descented then). What should I know about boosters and over-vaccinating... Man those little girls are stinky haha...it doesnt help that I have to keep my room door shut cause Lola (my dog) wants to see them sooo badly. Shes obsessed with little critters, love my hedgehogs. Not in a ``i want to eat you`` way thankfully, just full of love for the little things haha. Im gonna have to get them some potting soil to play in but i cant seem to find any that doesnt have fertilizers and all that other icky stuff. Does rice work just as well for getting the smelly oils off of their coats and what kind of rice... I dont actually mind the smell too much haha but everyone else does.  |

Does rice work just as well for getting the smelly oils off of their coats and what kind of rice... I dont actually mind the smell too much haha but everyone else does. my kids love long grain white rice, and it works fantastically at making them less smelly/oily. but they did smell BAD when I first brought them home from the pet store. I took the remote litter box idea and instead of litter, stuck some rice in it. they loveeee it   (it's usually not in the cage, I just had it in there for awhile because I had to lock them in due to having some people over) also, Oh and I forgot to ask Sherry... what`s the best way to figure out if either of them is deaf... is there some kind of noise test haha And I apologize for the lack of question marks after my questions, my computer is on a question mark strike... wont let me type them no matter what I do set them both down on the floor in front of the vacuum and turn it on |

The distemper is the only vaccine I get. I prefer to wait for the immune system to be fully mature (around 6 months) because any vaccine given before the maternal antibodies wear off is useless. My plan for my youngest is to vaccinate around 5-6 months, then get a titer done 2 weeks later to confirm a healthy immune response. If the antibodies are high, no need to do an adutuonal, and protection should continue years (if not life). But older ferrets an sick ferrets shouldn't be vaccinated, so it doesn't matter much anyway I skip rabies because I don't see a purpose. The law doesn't enforce the rabies requirement strictly here, and my ferrets don't go out in Public much and I don't let strangers hold my ferret to risk them biting anyone. I'll get some more links about vaccines, they should be in the medical section stickied. BRB |

Perfect, I`d rather rice than soil anyways, less messy, and probably less bad for them if they eat it! haha
And hahaha the vaccuum test sounds cruel! Well for the ones that arent deaf anyways haha!

The vacuum test isn't so accurate...I have one hearing, one deaf, and one undetermined fert but all three are fascinated by the vacuum . I'll squeek a toy, use a clicker, rattle coins in a can, stuff like that behind them when they aren't paying attention... Even then it can be hard to tell, if they're really into something they have selective hearing and might ignore you anyway. I do find my deaf girl is a lot easier to startle if she doesn't feel me coming up behind her. |
