I've had success using clavamox. Like I said unless I absolutely have to, I don't use the metro. I was using it for Porthos, and within a couple of days I decided that he was dying anyway (lymphomas) I certainly wasn't going to make what was left of his days miserable. We then used clavamox for him too. It doesn't work as fast but I don't think it's quite as foul tasting as other than a couple of coughs and some head shaking it usually goes down and I don't wear it. If they're being treated for ulcers the clavamox works but it takes longer. I'm willing to settle for longer if it produces less stress ciao

The Chloramphenical also works great for gastro upsets. It doesn't taste too bad either. It smells like vanilla. It works pretty fast too.

Oh man he is buggin bad when i gave him the liquid Metronidazole, he is not happy and I don't wanna stess him more. He was screaming and pawing at his mouth bad Koda HATED that stuff. What I did was mix it in a little bottle cap with a TON of FerretVite (ferretone will work as well) and then suck it into the syringe like that. Then I covered the syringe from end up the length of the syringe about halfway with huge globs of ferretvite (this works better than ferretone because it is gloopy and not a liquid). I would let him lick the 'vite off of the end, and then as he continued to lick it move it to the corner of his mouth and then squirted it all into his mouth (back corner - not straight in) and quickly gave him another glob of 'vite to lick to help keep him from spitting it out. Because he was already in the process of licking/swallowing he would swallow the meds unintentionally, and then the extra glob helped push the rest down (and keep him from hacking it back up). It took some practice and many days the metro ended up all over me and my room as he shook his head to spit it all out, but this was the method that worked the best for me. NOTHING else I tired worked. And I tried a LOT of different methods - he was on these meds for a long time. Thanks for the tip Katt, i'll have to remember that, Sly had a few meds he hated!

Ok my vet said no way its ECE just by looking at him. He said he would look horrible. So he said just stay on the Amoxicillin, and he gave me flavored Metro to try. Did not really say what it was but at least its nothing bad or ECE. I feel so much more relieved now. Thanks guys I will post more when he gets better or worse, which I hope does not happen

Oh thanks Heather. He needs it he has ha d tough week. Me too lol. Only problem I am having now is he still will not take that Metro med. Like I said my vet gave me a new one that is flavored. First I gave him the Amoxicillin, then some Nutra Cal, then went for the Metro and this time he spit and gagged up all the meds and pawed at his mouth so bad I thought he was bleeding when I looked at him but I am pretty sure it was the Amoxicillin mixed with the other stuff. So I dont even know if he got all his meds. He just will not take that Metro at all. I cant keep stressing him out morning and night with that and myself, almost had a panic attack because I thought I saw blood. Poor guy

Porthos's metro was also flavoured...chicken if I remember correctly. The poor little fellow would gag, choke and eventually urine and poop himself. I refused to give it to him. Nothing was worth that. I gather it tastes terrible. One thing I didn't find out was if it actually came as a pill format, I could have got that into him if it was a smaller pill. ciao Heather

My vet told me that trying to disguise metro would be about as effective as trying to disguise the taste of Buckley's cough syrup. By Boris' reactions, I'd say that's quite likely. I sandwiched it for him between two layers of 'tone. Now, he won't touch ferretone, because he's associated it with the metro.

I asked if it came in a pill and the vet said it was to big to give to a ferret. So this morning I let Thomas out and he ate some kibble, so I guess that is a good sign. He aslo went to the bathroom first thing when I let him out and it was not green but runny still

I used A LOT of chloramphenicol on one of my ferrets. I think it works the best and FAST. I never used gloves to handle it. It is not supposed to be used in people because it caused some bad side effect but fine for use in ferrets. That medicine worked wonders for my ferrets ibd. He had ulcers, he was pooping frank blood and lots of it. The chloramphenicol would fix him right up.
