hey everyone,
so my little guy, Max, has been with me for 6 years about, with no health problems until he was recently diagnosed with insulinoma. Surgery didn't work and now he's on diazoxide, which has been a miracle for the past month or so. I also changed his diet to Stella & Chewy's FDR.
he plays, has tons of energy and eats like a champ--gained some weight he'd lost since he stopped eating much when feeling sick.
anyway so I've been feeling great about his health. As usual last night around 11:30 I gave him dinner and his diazoxide, he played a bit and went to bed. Around 4:30 I woke up to him making a lot of noise. He had vomited his dinner up all over the cage and was digging in his litter like he was distressed. I kind of freaked out because he has NEVER vomited in the whole time I've had him.
He was running around but when I picked him up he seemed to fall asleep on me for half an hour or so, then scrambled up and was running around again. After a bit he threw up a little bit more, seeming distressed and running around the whole time. He squeaked a little while he was throwing up. When he finally stopped I put him on a towel and he just laid there for a minute, but seemed OK if breathing a little hard. I got him to drink a bit of water. He walked around a bit more while I was cleaning out his cage and then went to bed and has been sleeping peacefully for an hour or so.
His vomit just looked like regurgitated food but smelled pretty bad/acidic. Seems weird that he threw up several hours after eating...
Basically, not sure if this is an emergency or not.
I'm almost sure it's not a blockage as Max has always had lots of opportunities to chew/swallow things he shouldn't but never has. Not a chewer. He also ate and pooped normally all day, and played.
He's on diazoxide which I've been told several times can cause vomiting as a side effect, but I'm skeptical since he's been on it without problems for weeks.
He did eat 3x yesterday, because I still haven't figured out how much to give him--ever since switching him to the FDR he seems to gobble up however much I rehydrate and I've been experimenting with how much to give him because if he's hungry, I want him to eat!
So he did eat a good bit more than usual yesterday. Is it possible that the vomiting was due to overeating?
Or should I be worried about salmonella or some other bacterial issue?
Some of the food he ate had been sitting out for ~4 hours, but in my experience that shouldn't be an issue.
Should I try to get an emergency appointment tomorrow morning?
I'm in final exams in law school and already stressed to the max, my vet is almost an hour away and I'm broke from medication and surgery
I know these are not excuses and I absolutely will take him to the vet if need be, but I'm just not sure and am super out of my element because I've never had a ferret vomit before ever.
If I don't take him to the vet, should I try feeding beef baby food/carnivore care--will it be easier on his stomach? or should I just give him his usual FDR breakfast tomorrow?
very worried and puzzled. any advice from those experienced with ferret vomiting is welcome...
going to try to get a couple more hours of sleep
