Hello, We are still here Bea has been doing pretty good in general. Still waiting on the suprelorin of course Bea has had a few episodes where she is salivating and hacking, acting like her mouth hurts. She had the sore on the roof of her mouth a little while ago and was put on antibiotics and it cleared up. Today she has been salivating and not acting happy, she is still eating and drinking though. I gave her a few pieces of my dogs kibble (wheat free and corn free) as a treat yesterday, she loves it, I wonder if the hard dry kibble irritated her mouth? it looks like there might be a sore in the same spot as before. I'm hoping she feels better tomorrow...

The kibble could have irritated her mouth. Pred can also cause ulcers. Instead of kibble for a treat, I would recommend pieces of freeze dried, dehydrated meat (jerky), or some salmon oil or Extra virgin olive oil from a dropper bottle. Is she back on chunks? How are bones going?

We went backwards after her illness. She is eating soupies now. I'm graduating in three weeks so that is when I am going to get her back on track. I've contacted a local organic farm to hopefully have access to other types of organs and muscle meats. She had the des injection the end of February so she's due for another. I was so hoping that suprelorin would become available by now...
Bea seems to be improving slightly as of this morning. Yet she is a bit dehydrated. I got her some pedialite and the electrolyte water to help rehydrate her. Her vet will be in the office tomorrow if I need to get antibiotics... Sigh

I would really hold off on the pedialyte unless she is pretty severely dehydrated. Raw soupies has a lot of water content and should keep her hydrated. Pedialyte has sugar in it, which is helpful for rehydrating and helping a dehydrated person/animal retain water, but will not be kind to her pancreas esp already being borderline for insu. If she is back on soup don't forget that she will need to continue having her teeth brushed a few times a week. If you have time now before school finals season amps up, I would make a big batch of meat slivers and freeze them in ice cubes. You can thaw out one ice cube at a time and keep it in a container in the fridge for a few days and mix them into her soupies. That way you won't have a lot of daily prep, but can still get her back moving towards chunks again.

Bea is doing much better today I will definitely try to cut up a big batch of meat slivers and start mixing them back in with her soupies. And then I am going to do a refresher on meals 101. I haven't had the mental space to really get the proportions straight. (non mathematical art brain) I feel safe with the soups because I know the proportions are right

Maybe make a cute sign and stick it on the fridge as reference? It should be 10% heart, 10% organ (half liver, half other). Feeding 2 meals a day, 10% is about a meal and a half so every week she needs to get: 1.5 meals heart 1.5 meals organ (half liver, half others) 7-9 meals containing significant amounts of edible bones
Here is an example: Tuesday am: edible bone in meat Tuesday pm: muscle meat Wednesday am: edible bone in meat Wednesday pm: heart Thursday am: edible bone in meat Thursday pm: edible bone in meat Friday am: edible bone in meat Friday pm: ½ heart + ¼ liver + ¼ other organ Saturday am: edible bone in meat Saturday pm: muscle meat Sunday am: edible bone in meat Sunday pm: ½ liver + ½ other organ

Hello, Good news, Bea's vet ordered the suprelorin implant yesterday! They should be in next week, hopefully. I saw the notice on here about orders getting canceled. I really hope that doesn't happen. I was able to get beef tongue as another source of muscle meat. What do you think? Also, Bea's stools have been quite loose. I'm afraid the beef liver is too rich or maybe she is getting too much? I'm still feeding her the soupies with slivers mixed in. She will eat a few slivers each meal. So far the soup recipe has been: 8oz. beef, lamb, chicken or bison 1oz. chicken heart 1oz. beef liver 1/2tsp. bone meal and water. I'm still trying to get other organs but no luck really. I might be able to get some from the same farm I got the cow tongue from. She seems like she is restless tonight. High energy, but almost like she can't get comfortable. I really hope the implant comes in next week.

YAAAY! Any updates on this? I hope it comes through, fingers crossed!!.
I was able to get beef tongue as another source of muscle meat. What do you think? [\b] Yes - beef tongue is awesome! Very high in taurine so definitely a good choice to add in!
[\b] Beef liver is super rich, can you not get chicken livers from the grocery store? Often Walmart carries them in the frozen section so that may be worth a shot if you can't find it elsewhere. Also, increase her bonemeal to 3/4 tsp. that should firm her stools up - soft stools are often an indicator of not enough bone/calcium. How much water are you adding to the soup (like what is the consistency? For organs, wasn't she taking blended organs separately before? I would consider trying to get her to take organ soupies and see what she thinks - for some it's the flavor but for others it is the texture. Also trying chicken may help too as beef is very strongly flavored.
She seems like she is restless tonight. High energy, but almost like she can't get comfortable. I really hope the implant comes in next week. [\b] Coukd be the adrenal - is her vulva swollen?

Bea got her implant put in today!!! It was the same price as last year $180. I suspected it was the beef liver that was making her poos runny, it seemed to coincide. I'll switch back to the chicken liver. I am able to get organic chicken liver easily. I'm really glad beef tongue is good! Because it's biiiiiig I think I might be able to get kidney at some point. I'm waiting for the farm to contact me. Her vulva has been swollen off and on lately. She was kind of freaking out in the am recently and banging on her cage to get out (which she doesn't usually do). Her energy level has been kind of frantic as of late as well as a hefty appetite but she isn't really gaining weight per se. I'm hoping I'll see some nice improvements now that she has the implant.

Bea got her implant put in today!!! It was the same price as last year $180.WOOT! (dance) Great news times two!! Hopefully she's feeling perkier soon. Keep in mind the implant takes 6-8 weeks to kick in though. I'm always stressing out that it isn't working by the 5-6 week point and by week 7-8 I start to see the changes finally. I suspected it was the beef liver that was making her poos runny, it seemed to coincide. I'll switch back to the chicken liver. I am able to get organic chicken liver easily.
I'm really glad beef tongue is good! Because it's biiiiiig I think I might be able to get kidney at some point. I'm waiting for the farm to contact me.For the beef liver, I would keep it in the rotation if you can every now and then for variety - maybe make a soup using it and freeze it and only feed that soup once a week, just to keep her familiar with it. UNLESS even that small amount makes her have soft stools for more than the period of one day, that's a sign it is too much for her little system. Kidney would be great, let me know if you hear back from them. Sounds like the behavior is probably adrenal related - the vulva almost certainly is and she is likely feeling a big sexually frustrated. If my boys' implant wears off they become really sexually aggressive and mount each other to the point of distress of the one being subjected to the attentions - but Bea doesn't have another ferret to let her frustration out on so she is going to be prone to letting it out in other ways. Are you putting liver and heart slivers in with her soup, or do you want to separate out the organs from the soup? I think it would be helpful to get her taking an organ soup so that you can work on organ chunks separately from the muscle meat chunks since she is being picky about the liver. I forget if we discussed this before, but have you considered commercial grinds? I don't tend to suggest them often, but they can be a really useful tool for transitioning from soup to chunks. Last but not least - aren't you graduating from your program soon? Or is that next year - I can't remember but I thought it was coming up soon?

Hello, I've graduated with my MFA! Yae! Bea's energy has been great, she seems in good spirits. I still need to switch her back over to the chicken liver. Her poops are still quite runny from the beef liver. Can you point me in the right direction as far as commercial grinds. Also, I think I already know the answer to this ques. But... I noticed wysong has a new raw variety... Any thoughts?

Woot Congrats! (dance) :boing: For commercial grinds, HareToday and RadCat are the top 2 I would recommend. RadCat has the bonus of being already balanced supposedly (I'd just double check their percentages). I don't know anything about the Wysong stuff sorry. :/ How is Bea doing?

Cool, I'll check out red cat. I didn't do hae today because of the bulk amount and I don't have a freezer : / Bea is doing good. Her coat looks great and her weight is pretty stable. I'm going to get more chicken liver today.
