Well said linsu! I agree totally. Also, an important distinction is what bring back policy is in place in case the new ferret doesn't work out. And, is the breeder always there to answer any questions. The most important thing to me is will this kit or ferret be going to a good home that will love it, feed it well, take it to the vet when needed etc. If a breeder is too busy or isn't interested in talking with you think twice. For instance, today I have a potential adopter calling and expect to be on the phone for two hours to start the "get to know phase" of my application process.
Heather there was the LIFE show system which was in the East US. The shows were extremely popular and fun with the emphasis on maintenance and color and fun classes. Tons of vendors and elbow room only. Extreme politics was not a factor usually. The other I'm thinking of was the GLFA, Greater Lakes Ferret Assoc, they put on two shows a year and had a very good in depth judging system where judges ferrets were always judged in a separate class to avoid politic winning and on the show card you put down the ferrets main background such as was it more Australian and the ferret was judged to that type standard. A ferret from England, or Australia or New Zealand etc was/is slightly different in look and structure. When a ferretry goes out of business they have the records and will do what they want with them. With the internet now and with so many breeders in the US having the same bloodlines it's usually not difficult to find past pedigrees through others. I still have my pedigrees going back to the early 90's. Also, what most do not realize is that most privately bred ferrets in the US if you go back far enough have lineage that originated with TPP (Two Pole Pumpkin) that was in Oregon. The gal that ran that was one of the primary importers of whole ferrets in the early days. She imported from all over the world. That includes even the (quote)"superior high priced show breeders of today". Of course over the years others have imported some new lines privately.
