Ever since I've gotten my ferret Frisky I've been interested in his pedigree. Unfortunately, the north TX breeder I got him from did not have one for him. Are there any breeders on this forum in Texas or Oklahoma? I think it's possible I can trace origins, since I know his breeder name, which was "Prince Kiss the Frog". He had become Lucius and then Frisky Lucius, and now just Frisky. If I can't find his pedigree, or any of his relatives' pedigrees, I would at least like to know what a typical ferret pedigree looks like. If someone can show me one, that would be great. Thanks!

I lost contact with the breeder, and don't know what her ferretry was called. But the town was Anna, TX.

Do non show breeders even use pedigrees? I expect quality breeders like Joan keep excellent records and can show you the family tree and can tell you who was bred to who how far back, how their temperament and health is and a slew of other things, but do they bother with the whole certificate thing? I always felt like that was a thing for showing animals, not necessarily just plain old pets. But then again, I've never owned any pet from a professional breeder. I've got mill ferrets, my dog was rescued and my cats and birds growing up were from home BYB breeders that didn't bother to fix animals.

No, you have to be a member of the AFA to get "registered pedigrees", that doesn't mean that a good breeder won't have a lineage listing. That's what I was wondering and why I asked for a name, when the ferretry name wasn't remembered. I do think that Joan has a ferretry name though...I'd never thought about it though. She many not lol. You're right though it's mostly show people who use ferretry names. ciao

Any reputable breeder needs to at least keep a lineage to be sure they aren't breeding too close, or who was bred to whom if a genetic defect suddenly crops up.

Hi most good breeders keep records of who is bred to who and what is produced and how they develop ( this is there way of keeping track when trying to better the breed ) lots of breeders also buy in fresh blood lines to improve stock BUT they can only rely on what they are told as there is no ferret club like the kennel club where lines are registered so the kit from a show champion could in fact be from a secondary litter no one can tell ! pedigrees are only pieces of paper constant contact with the breeder for advice and to keep them up dated on the health of any kit purchased is worth more than any piece of paper just my two pennies worth take care bye for now Bev

All of your Breeder, show ferrets will have a pedigree. Thor's goes back 5 generations. It tells you who his parents are, Who their breeder was, a brief description of his color, etc. I was able to go to Thor's mother's breeders website, and visit the ferretry on line. Interesting, could not read a word (it was in German). But I loved looking at the ferrets. European ferrets are different than the ferrets that are breed here (MF, PV, etc.) The pedigree (Bloodlines) are neat to read, even though there is not a lot of information. Your little one probably has a pedigree. (The orginal owner probably has it). You would have to find the breeder, know what year he was born, so the breeder can find the information. Some breeders, have several litters a year. That can be as many as 50 babies a year or more, depending on how large the ferretry is. It may be hard to remember one particular baby. I have stayed in contact with Herc's breeder. Hercules is Pandora's uncle. Pandora's mother was Herc's littermate. A pedigree is nice if breeding or showing. Other than that, it is not important. A piece of paper cannot love you. Your baby loves the same with or without it. I would love my babies just the same even without one. I have loved many (MF & PV) ferrets, everyone special in their own way. I was not looking for a pedigree when I got my breeder babies. I just was looking for a healthier baby. That is what is important. Love...you can't buy that.

That non profit organization has no control or owns any registered pedigrees. They don't even have a ferret /Ferretry data base. (for example like the American Quarter Horse Association - registered your horses with that organization)
Reputable breeder will keep track of their lineage and document it. Most of them will give you a copy of lineage when you purchased a kit from them. Some of breeders have them post on their web site.
They do offer registered ferretry name program, to protect the use of ferretry name in the naming of their ferrets at the show.

Joan Claque lives in Austin, Texas. The woman in Anna, Texas is a back yard breeder. I personally lead a rescue of a hob, jill, and 6 kits from a man who bought from this woman in Anna. She would not allow anyone to come to her property to buy ferrets. She came to his house with the job he asked for and she showed up with a hob, pregnant jill. It was a very sad situation. She wanted to stop breeding ferrets and "focus" more on sugar gliders.
