Thank you Wenmister for clarifying the registry question. Only a few breeders choose to register their ferretry name also with this club as it is just something you pay extra money for. It means nothing really. It's just another subversive way to advertise so that general people think that they are better since their name is registered. Not saying these breeders are not good, just that it's only something you pay extra for. I have a US registered Trademark on my Ferretry name which helps. Many good, reputable breeders are not members of the AFA as well but will be able to give you a full, long generation pedigree on any of their kits or adult breeders. There used to be three club/show systems in the US as well. Right now the AFA is the only club that sponsors shows but possibly in the future there will be more.

Oh, now there's something that's interesting. I didn't realize that there had been more clubs than just the AFA. Where they more regional? ciao

I know there was one more to the west(can't recall the name), and that a bit of a battle royale went on between them for quite a while.

unless you are a breeder a pedigree is fun to own, but doesn't say much. On my pedigrees which I give to everyone, I not only put ancestors, but what their color was. This will tell a breeder that if they suddenly pop up with albino in a dark litter that it is most likely due to a great grandmother who was albino. Farah Shimbo years ago had wonderful book on ferret genetics and how a certain trait can skip generations, then pop up. I have a wonderful little hybrid jill from reputable breeder that lists only sire and dam. At first, I was upset, but realized this was hybrid jill and ancestors were not known

Meant to add more. Any reputable breeder also welcomes visits to a breeder's home. I will use as an example the best clients I have. They knew I don't release my babies until 12 wks, but they made 3 different trips that were 400 miles roundtrip for them just to meet babies parents, check my ferretry, ask questions. They now own 4 of my kids and couldn'te be happier. They have converted them all to raw even their little ancient MCF girl. If I don't know a person and they can't take the time to visit and ask questions, etc, then I don't sell. New Mexico is a huge state with few people, but I feel those who are willing to do this are usually the good ones

Sorry to be such a blabbermouch, prob because I have been off the grid so long due to 2 surgeries and illness(doing great know) but just because a person has their ferretry registered means squat to me. No one comes out t0 inspect your ferretry or breedeing practices. You pay the fee and you get registered

I have to say one more thing-sorry! Please don't be fooled by how "slick" people's websites are. Some people are great at putting up nice websites (not me -LOL) but that means squat. They usually have professionals do this and nothing beats a home visit. I can think of a breeder in Oklahoma who has impressive site, but I personally wouldn't sel or buy a fruitfly from her...just a heads up!

No worries here. Anyone I'd want to pick for a breeding mentor I'd be meeting personally and visiting their ferretry. Same with buying any animals from them.

When a ferretry goes out of business (like Quantum Leap Ferrets)what happens to the breeding records that have been kept?
