So I am looking into getting a small AC unit for my girls ferret room. The usually get free roam of most of the house (which has central air), but they are now going to be restricted to one single room with no AC. There are too many other people coming in and out of the house for them to be safe. No one bothers to close doors, close cabinets, etc. So for their safety, they are getting a single room.
Anyway, I considered doing a window AC unit, but the way the cage is in the room, the AC unit would be directly blowing on them. I might be able to rearrange the room a bit, but I can't be sure.
What other types of small AC units are there? I might be able to get a large fan, but I don't want to rely only on that during the summer.

Honestly ferrets like it cold, they might not mind it blowing right on them and they will go sleep on the bottom of the cage if they do, or snuggle together. You can always put a thick blanket on that side of the cage to block the air if it's an issue. I just have a small window unit, it's not often terribly hot here but over 75 or high humidity it goes on.

you could get a tower fan, i have one and it cools the air before it blows it out it rocks so hard

Would it cool a very hot room? This is Florida with a south facing window.... I want my girls to be comfortable. I will probably be getting some cooling pads to.

Can you hang a dark blanket during the worst of the afternoon heat? That would help tremendously.

Yes, I could do that. I don't want to throw off their light schedule though

I understand, but too much heat would be the more immediate threat. Can you hang a blanket over the half of the window giving the most light/heat? That way, they'd still get natural lighting, but less heat. Yes, you'd have to move it as the sun moves, but....

Well the AC isn't an immediate issue ATM. They are staying in the main living area with central air. They will be moving full time to the ferret room In about a month. So I'm just trying to figure out the best way to keep it cool. I have an extra window AC that I could use, but it would blow right on the cage. To be exact, it blow on the shelf of the lower level of the FN. The window AC wouldn't be a problem then...

If it's blowing on the lower level, just leave that one with some hammies, etc. Put a warmer sleeping den there as well. That way, they have the option of either laying in the hammies, sleeping den with blankies, or even just moving to the top where it isn't blowing on them. Since fuzz do so much better with cool than hot, they should be fairly comfortable. If not- you can always move the a/c out of the window.

I have my guys in the family room which is the last room on the route of the central AC, it also no long has a tree to shade the roof so that room is at least 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house...in the summer I have some smooth river rocks that I keep in the freezer and then on the really hot days I take them and line the bottom of an empty litter box... the first few time the fuzz were pretty freaked out by the stones and the coldness, then it got really hot and they actually fight over the litter box with the stones now...

That's a great idea! I'm thinking were just going to put a window AC unit in, but I think I'll try to stone too

You could also get some cooling tiles, the ones people get for Chinchillia's and use them....

Would a slab of granite stay cool?

Definitely. Especially if you keep it in the fridge in between uses.

This is a large slab of granite (heavy too) - I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep it in the fridge (or even carry it there) The girls played in some ice water today in a shallow baking dish. Dixie actually grabbed ice cubes and tried to stash them
