Here is a recipe for homemade "Vaseline". It is all natural products and it sounded so much nicer to have on hand when we have to give some to our fuzzies. INGREDIENTS - weigh both oil and beeswax on a scale olive oil (114g) grated beeswax (28g) In a double boiler over simmering water and medium heat, combine the olive oil and beeswax, and heat until the wax has melted. Let it cool a bit and then beat until creamy, taking care not to splash as it's hot. Makes 1/2 cup. Store in a glass jar with a screw-top.

This doesn't solidify at all? I'll admit, I'm paranoid about the beeswax. However- I know nothing about what you've described ;D any idea if it also presents the same absorption issues that Vaseline does?

Beeswax is used in all natural laxatones I have seen such as tomlyn brand. I would like to try the homemade kind.

This is a lovely recipe for lip balm if you don't want to give it to your ferrets. Depending on the oil used, you may have to adjust the amount of olive oil to make it thinner for the laxative. The ratio used here is 4:1, but I needed a bit more olive oil. I used 3g wax & 14g oil for the 2nd test mix.

Please make a small batch to test the thickness when it sets. Different brands oils and wax make different strengths. If a batch is too thick, keep it for lip balm, it stays on for most of the day.

Thanks foxfire! How long does it last, and does it have to be stored in any special manner?

That is a good question. Would adding vitamin e be a good idea since it is a natural preservative?

I really don't know the shelf life. Vitamin E could work, not sure on the ratio tho. It would be best stored in a dark coloured screw top jar, clear if that's all you have. I would say just make a small batch rather than a big one. I made it in about 10min, in a dish in a bowl of hot water. I am starting a Business now with natural soaps & skin care products. I have a few more things to do, and sort out my insurance, finish my web site, then I will be set to go.

If you have vaseline at home, is it ok to use? i don't have any bees wax so i don't know, i went to make a thread about lax for ferrets but came across this. I am just worried that it IS petroleum jelly and all, it won't hurt the ferrets? pardon my stupidity

Stiv- what's described here ISN'T actual petroleum jelly(Vaseline). The problem with Vaseline is that it coats their insides somewhat and can prevent nutrient absorption. This doesn't do that.

That is what i was asking, i know this isn't real Vaseline and i think i trust this more, i was just asking if Vaseline would be ok to use as a substitute because i don't have any lax, pumpkin, or bees wax(to make this recipe) so i don't know what to use.

I reserve Vaseline or lax for potential blockages. Any reason you can't pick up a few tins of pumpkin or squash baby food?
