Well it looks like we may be a couple weeks away from meat shortages.
what do you all have planned if you cannot find any meat at your local store?
I am going to be hunting down meat at the stores today to try and get enough to be able to feed my ferrets for a few weeks. I can eat other things but my ferrets need meat.
all the stores have limits to discourage hording, but I need enough to make it through a few weeks, Going to have to hit a few different stores. I do grinds so I would like enough to be able to grind a bunch at once.

When I heard about the first plants closing the thought went through my mind that I'll need to prep for shortages as well. I picked up a bunch of organs the other day so I'm good for a month. We have a mini fridge that I'm going to test to see if I can get it down to freezing (900 square foot house and no garage means nowhere for a dedicated freezer, unfortunately). I'm going to stock up, but I may also buy some extra FDR or else switch to whole prey if it comes to that.

Currently we a full size standing freezer plus the bottom of our fridge has a pull out freezer. Most of which is filled with meat. I don't think there will be a shortage however, if there is we will be going first to meat lockers, then if that doesn't fill our need. We could start butchering some of our chickens. I would also start buying rodents to breed do live whole prey feedings. However I do believe we are set for a few months on meat for both us and DiNozzo.

Mostly whole prey for me from Hare Today and then mice from Perfect Prey. I am raising asf rats, but I need a break from them, whew! Got bit the other day and was dropping blood all the way to the bathroom. Lol (although I was not laughing at the time). I do order duck hearts online. Hope I have no problems there.

I just coincidentally bought a bunch of ferret meat so I’m set for a long while. By the way, what kind of grinder do you use msav ? I’m deeply dissatisfied with mine!

Oh my, that’s a beast! Thanks for telling me. I don’t think I’ll try the midrange model I was looking at if it won’t do much better than my weenie grinder then. That’s a lot more than I was looking to spend, though.

That's exactly why I bought a small freezer in cases like this! His freezer is stocked and I always try to get extra meat when I find some even though I am stocked but sometimes I can't find some meats so when I get some I always try to stay ahead so I'm never low. When I buy meat for myself I'm always buying a couple extra for the fert too.

That’s a lot more than I was looking to spend, though. Yes it is more than I wanted to spend as well. I got so fed up I know I overbought more than I needed. could probably get away with one half the cost. But i got tired of breaking them, and thought I could never break that one. It used to take me hours to break down the meat and remove the bones for the cheapy meat grinders. I went through 3 of those cheap meat grinders getting higher and higher cost with each of them. I got blisters on my hands from using poultry sheers cutting chicken into small enough portions that they could handle the grinding. I kept having to take them apart and un-jam them, removing gristle and cartilage from the blades, over heating them and having to wait for them to cool down before I could continue. The first time I used it what took normally 3 hours to grind was done in 10 mins. In just the 2 years of use I think it more than paid for itself in the time it has saved me.

I really hope this is the case and not just an article aimed at keeping people from panic buying. the reality is if there is an outbreak of meat workers getting sick, they will not have the people able to keep the place running.

That 2nd one looks promising. I like the foot pedal. I tried one similar to the first one, found it to have plastic gears after it self destructed on me. if that one has steel gears it definitely is a viable option. if you do get either of them post back and let us know. a less expensive option would be great to have on the forum. I would not bother with that blender. I have a blendtec and have burned up 3 of them trying to use them for this. good thing they have a 7 year warranty.

Now I’m scared of workers being forced to come in sick to the plants and the meat not being safe from it, there’s no winning here.
Excited about the $200 grinder prospect! Scared to buy it myself as I rarely grind and mine currently carefully eats around bone pieces. Maybe with a future ferret...

Technically if you cook the meat properly the virus would not survive. however it is touching it before it is cooked and not washing you hands after. I don't see the issue with getting sick from contaminated meat. It is the workers being forced to work and the meat plants given a complete pass to responsibility for any safety and sanitation violations. The reason the virus is running rampant in that environment is the whole sanitary issue That most plants barely meet, and the fact that the workers are on an assembly line working shoulder to shoulder with each other. There is no room for 6 feet. The meat disassembly lines are not designed that way.
