I need one ASAP! Fed up with Percy knocking the books of and thinking it's his right to be able to do this...
Can anyone recommend what I should be looking for? Maybe a kindle will solve the issue... lol I know I will need doors, but am worried what sort of doors and type of catch... the smart arse can now open my bedside cabinet drawer, climbs in and removes all the items.... Of course this is a great game to Percy when he manages to sneek into my bedroom which is a ferret free zone....
What bookcase solutions have you all gone for?

You're just going to have to teach Percy to read. He's really interested in books. (giggle)
I had a large library and Ponce never knocked a book over. Roamy has once. I found him with a Martha Stewart cookbook open and looking like he was looking at the pictures.
Lawyers bookcases have glass doors. You might have to put a child safety lock on it. Kindles are great though, but it's so hard to get rid of books.

I have an ikea billy book case which the bottom self is usually attacked the other side of my living room I have a "normal" book case 4 shelves 3 1/2 foot wide... Books have been removed from bottom two shelves, however the other two shelves are attacked... he jumps from sofa onto there. He knows full well he isn't allowed but carries on regardless
I've caught him "reading gardening books, cook books, harry potter, twilight whatever is available! I'm amazed at his strength to be able to push some of the books of the shelf.
Might look into magnetic latches. I guess as long as he cant lay on his back and use his front paws to prize it open I have a chance....

Awww, he was helping Juliet out -- you know, putting all her kitchen utensils to use I have to admit I'm a little jealous of all your smart rambunctious fuzzies. Maisie doesn't do anything that interesting. Then again, my life is a lot easier

Don't worry Blue, my current fuzzies are like that. I think it's because they were basically kept in a cage 24/7 for a long time (2-4+ years) before they came to me. Even though they're much healthier, they still aren't strong enough to climb onto a single piece of furniture, and are a lot more subdued. My first baby Truffles I had from a kit, so she learned to climb at an early age! One time when I came out of the washroom I caught her at the very top of my entertainment system, a foot from the ceiling! That's where I had kept anything fragile (since I thought it was out of reach), nosing each item off onto the floor one-by-one. She also figured out how to climb a wire dvd rack like a ladder, and could scale guitar amps and curtains with ease! I don't think either Mocha or Nova has ever broken (or even damaged) a single thing. Truffy on the other hand probably went through an entire set of glassware on her own!

Ah, that was Truffles, not Nova! Mocha & Nova still sound pretty smart, like learning so quickly to stand on the scale without moving. I have to bribe Maisie.
It is reassuring to hear that they are more subdued, though. I don't think Maisie was let out much either, she was living in a cage in a garage when I got her. I've been trying to teach her how to climb a little bit, while realizing what a bad idea that is!

Aww why ruin the fun? We just put the books back so they can knock them out again. It's fun! Just keep more important books on the higher shelves. haha Otherwise you'll just have to find a cabinet type bookshelf.

I've been trying to teach her how to climb a little bit, while realizing what a bad idea that is! Oh they are smart. So, so d*mn clever. Sometimes I'm pretty sure they even understand a fair bit of English. But overall they aren't super crazy or active. They dook maybe 2-3 times per week, and don't get excited more than once a day They always want to get up onto the couch, but simply don't have the raw strength to do it. They did, however, figure out how to flip their cuddle cup and push it places to use as a step. @abster, you'll quickly learn that the harder you try and keep something away from a ferret, the harder they'll try to get to it. In fact, by attempting to ferret proof/booby trap your house you will actually train Percy to become smarter and more resourceful. Your best bet is to find a way to make one single area (i.e. your bedroom) 100% ferret-proof, and just hide anything valuable/delicate in there

Some are just laid back and cool, like Maisie. My Mika is like that. She's quiet and doesn't play for long periods of time.

So pleased to hear I'm not the only one with book reading ferrets! Percy could easily be any of the ferrets in the photos and yes you are quite right the more I say no to something the more determined he is to get to the area/ item.
hurricanekatt, you certainly have some light reading material there!
